Fabrics manufacturer to create 55 jobs in Rockingham County

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. ? Gov. Bev Perdue announced Monday that the Global Textile Alliance Inc. fabrics manufacturer plans to create 55 jobs and invest $7.4 million over the next three years in Reidsville.

Officials said the project was made possible in part by a $150,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund.

?North Carolina has a long and celebrated history in the textile industry,? said Gov. Perdue, in a prepared statement. ?Manufacturers are expanding here because of our state?s investments in education and job training programs.?

State officials said Global Textile Alliance is headquartered in Reidsville and manufactures bedding and upholstery fabrics which are sold to several major U.S. furniture brands.

The Reidsville plant is home to the company?s corporate headquarters, distribution, design, sales and marketing, finance and quality control divisions. There are currently more than 130 people working at the facility.

Officials said salaries will vary by job, but the average annual payroll for the new jobs will be more than $1.5 million.

?Global Textile Alliance, Inc. is extremely pleased to have the continued support of North Carolina to help us broaden the foundation of our company,? said Steven Graven, President of Global Textile Alliance, in a press release.

(AP) ? Arnold Schwarzenegger says his wife, Maria Shriver, was told to "snap out of it" by her mother for her attempts to persuade him against running for California governor in 2003, a conversation that ultimately opened the door to his successful candidacy.

Eunice Shriver told her daughter that her husband would be "angry for the rest of his life" if she stopped his ambitions, Schwarzenegger writes in his new autobiography, "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story."

The former governor says in the book that he had decided against running to recall Gov. Gray Davis after his wife implored him not to for the sake of their family. Maria Shriver announced his decision to their four children.

But he writes that when Maria Shriver told her mother about her efforts to thwart Schwarzenegger's political ambitions, Eunice told her daughter that women in their family "always support the men when they want to do something." Schwarzenegger says he didn't know about the conversation at the time, but learned of it later.

Maria Shriver then softened her stance, paving the way for Schwarzenegger to announce his candidacy on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," where he says he felt most comfortable.

The announcement came after a week of wavering. Schwarzenegger says before he headed to the TV appearance, his wife handed him two pieces of paper with talking points she had written: one in case he decided to run, another in case he decided not to.

He writes that Shriver went on to become a key ally and adviser to his campaign and eventual governorship.

Schwarzenegger has often said that Maria's mother and her father, Sargent Shriver, were essential to his eventual decision to seek public office, and the most "extraordinary human beings I've ever met." But he also writes in the book that he often teased his wife that the close-knit Democratic Kennedy clan was "like a bunch of clones" because there was such conformity among them.

A spokesman for Shriver, Matthew DiGirolamo, declined to comment on the contents of the book.

"Total Recall" will officially be published next week. The Associated Press purchased an early copy.

Schwarzenegger also writes he had a "hot affair" with actress Brigitte Nielsen at a time he and Maria Shriver were dating and already living together.

Schwarzenegger and Nielsen co-starred in the 1985 film "Red Sonja." Nielsen wrote in a memoir published last year that she and Schwarzenegger had an "outrageous affair" while making the movie and that she didn't know until later that he was involved with Shriver.

In "Total Recall," Schwarzenegger writes that he knew the fling with Nielsen wouldn't last and in fact it only made him realize that he wanted to marry Shriver.

The book is part of an effort by the onetime "Mr. Universe" and Hollywood action star to rebrand himself after leaving office with a mixed record and subsequent embarrassing revelations about a fling he had with the family's housekeeper. Schwarzenegger, who fathered a son with the housekeeper, says he also let the boy down.

Schwarzenegger, 65, said he avoided telling his wife for years about the boy, who is now a teenager, even when Shriver asked him, partly because of his longtime penchant for secrecy, and his fear that the news would become public and undermine his political career. He told his wife in January 2011, when she confronted him the day after he left office.

In an interview with "60 Minutes" scheduled to air Sunday, Schwarzenegger said having sex with his housekeeper was "the stupidest thing" he ever did to his now-estranged wife and caused great pain to her and their four children. CBS aired excerpts of the interview Friday.

"I think it was the stupidest thing I've done in the whole relationship. It was terrible. I inflicted tremendous pain on Maria and unbelievable pain on the kids," Schwarzenegger tells "60 Minutes."

Schwarzenegger says he also let down the son he fathered with the housekeeper.

Shriver filed for divorce in July.

In his book, the usually ebullient Schwarzenegger admits to some loneliness, even though he packed his schedule with speeches, projects and movie-making after Shriver and the children moved out of the house. He said his career had been fun for 30 years because he shared it with Maria.

They had done everything together, he writes.

The former GOP governor also writes about a 2003 White House meeting with Karl Rove in which the top GOP strategist told him the recall would not happen and instead introduced the actor to then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice as his pick to run for California governor in 2006.

Schwarzenegger felt snubbed.

He asks, "How could Rove have been so wrong?"

Rove's office said he was traveling Friday and could not be reached for comment.

Rice's chief of staff at Stanford University, Georgia Godfrey, said Rice cannot recall "any conversation on this subject."

"She has stated many times in the past that she has no desire to run for public office and those sentiments have still not changed," Godfrey said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.

Match Making For Boomers: Love, Dating and Marriage

For one who has spent quite a number of years on the love, dating and marriage scene, I feel qualified to make certain bold statements. Without apology it is quite clear that every normal human being desires to be happy. However let the truth be told to those who care to listen that being married or being single has nothing to do with being happy. Deciding to get married because you are presently unhappy may open you up to a rude shock! Conversely, deciding to stay single because many marriages these days don't last may leave you equally unfulfilled and unhappy. Being happy is a choice, remaining single is a choice and being married is a choice. You can CHOOSE to be the way you want to be. What you choose is what you become! It is this basic lack of understanding that has precipitated the numerous cries of "help save my marriage" that is noised all over the place these days.

The western world has the greatest number of relationship experts, counselors, books and materials yet holds the record of having the highest divorce rate, most number of single parents, and a greater ratio of single women of marriageable age to married than at any other period in time. Furthermore there is a consistent move away from heterosexual relationship and an emphasis on same sex relationship/marriage.

In my extensive study and research on the internet, one cannot but wonder if the aim of these so called experts giving advice in love relationship is to mislead the vulnerable, gullible and unsuspecting consumers of their products and services and sabotage their relationships. One of the tenets of capitalism is to find out what the consumers want, produce, sell and make a killing out of it. The direct consequence of this phenomenon on the relationship scene is that in order to produce best-sellers, experts have continued to churn out stuffs that THE CONSUMERS WANT TO HEAR not the things they NEED TO HEAR!!! No wonder the high rate of relationship failure and a destruction of the marriage and family institutions. It is all a game of numbers, and bountiful sales lead to plenty dollars in the bank. It is this burden to make a positive difference in the lives of people and correct all the false psychological theories that birthed this article

Marriage comes with certain ENJOYMENTS that singles are not afforded. Marriage is an adventure that you are encouraged to explore. However with the enjoyments come the responsibilities. Note that you may enjoy without being happy. You may enjoy the financial security that comes with being married or the sex, the status, the respect you are given for being a married woman/man, the joy of parenthood e.t.c No wonder some stay married despite the fact that they are not really happy. The reason is that there are some aspects of the relationship that they are enjoying and to them the benefit of staying married outweighs the divorce/single life option.

UNDERSTANDING THE RESPONSIBILITIES

The male man (man) and the female man (woman) are both human beings but with different roles. In a relationship, two is attempting to become one. They must thus understand that to operate as ONE TEAM each must understand and operate in its

unique role. The male becomes the HEAD of the team while the female becomes the HEART of the team. The man is called to lead while the woman is called to help. The heart is the organ to love with while the head is the organ to think, reason and coordinate with. As the heart, it is easy for the woman to be tender and loving but she has to learn to yield, submit to the leadership of her man and to complement and not compete with him. As the head, it is easy for the man to lead and co-ordinate and take the initiative but he must learn to be tender and loving always responding to the heart deep advice and nudging of the woman. This is the perfect team! Anything other than this arrangement is CONFUSION!!

The woman in a relationship may be intelligent and richer than the man but she

has to step aside and let him take charge because that is his calling. To illustrate this: Take for example a car. All the occupants of the car may know how to drive. But to get them to their mutual destination only one of them will have to drive. This is because there is only one driver seat. Others may give their opinion as to where and when to turn in order to get them to where they are going but the decision and the responsibility lies in the hands of the driver. That is the man's role. The moment each person in the relationship understands that marriage comes with enjoyments as well as responsibilities and each person is willing to accept and carry out their responsibilities, true happiness will be the result. This I believe is the best relationship love advice that can be offered at such a difficult time on the relationships scene.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in the dangerously fast paced thriller End of Watch

AJ Parker, Contributing Writer
September 27, 2012
Filed under Arts & Entertainment, Entertainment, Movies & Television

End of Watch is a cop movie with a dangerously fast pulse. Written and directed by David Ayer, who wrote films like Training Day and SWAT, this action packed movie will keep you at the edge of your seat from beginning to end.

The film takes place in Los Angeles and is about two LAPD cops played by Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pe?a. As soon as the film starts you are thrown into the stress filled lives of officers Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and Zavalla (Pe?a) as they race through the streets of Los Angeles in an intense car chase.

Taylor and Zavalla are legends in the amongst their colleagues, known for being tough and getting the job done. They haven?t been on the force for that long but their close partnership and hard work has gotten them a reputation that their co-workers envy. After a few noteworthy arrests they gain the attention of a Mexican Cartel and find themselves skating on thin ice as they try to find out what?s really going on in the streets of South Central, Los Angeles.

The film is shot as if the footage was taken from the characters themselves. When the other cops at the police station ask what Taylor is doing with the camera, he tells them it is a project for school. At times this technique of using the point of view of the characters is really exciting and well put together. However, there are times when you feel like you might get motion sickness.

There are also scenes in the movie where it is rather obvious that a third person is filming, but it doesn?t take too much of the thrill away. Coincidentally, the bad guys are also rolling around with a video camera, which seems silly and unrealistic but still manages to give the audience an interesting point of view.

While End of Watch is an action movie at heart, it has many elements of a drama and quite a few scenes that will make you laugh. As soon as the characters are introduced, you become attached to them, which makes it even more nerve wracking to watch the scenes where they risk their lives.

?

Follow the Torch on Twitter: @STJTorch

What really keeps your attention on the screen is how the point of view filming puts you right in the middle of the action. You feel as if you?re sitting in the squad car. When the officers leave the car for a traffic stop, you?re right behind them. The action scenes really get your adrenaline pumping and you might have to take a breath or two when they?re finished.

At the end of the day, you really can?t go wrong with this movie. It reaches many audiences because of the various genre elements that it contains. It?ll make you laugh, cringe and almost want to cry. The plot is full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing throughout the movie. I would recommend it to anyone who can put up with bad language and violence, sorry Grandma.

US aims to rally Syrian opposition with new aid

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Obama administration moved Friday to rally Syria's opposition with pledges of $45 million in new non-lethal and humanitarian assistance as the administration and other world leaders lamented the failure of diplomatic efforts to push Syrian President Bashar Assad from power.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the U.S. would contribute an additional $15 million in non-lethal gear ? mostly communications equipment ? to the civilian opposition trying to oust Assad as well as $30 million in new humanitarian assistance to help those affected by the continuing violence.

She also delivered a new, stark warning to Iran that it must stop arming and supporting the Assad regime.

"It is no secret that our attempts to move forward at the U.N. Security Council have been blocked repeatedly, but the United States is not waiting," Clinton said as she announced the new aid at a gathering of the Friends of Syria group that she hosted at a New York hotel on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. She and other foreign ministers from the group met with nine Syrian opposition figures, including several who traveled from Syria to attend Friday's session, to discuss strategy.

With U.N. action blocked by Russia and China, Clinton said the rest of the world must support the Syrian opposition. She also said it was urgent that the fractured foes of the regime unite around plans for a political transition that could put an end to more than three decades of Assad family rule. Activists say the current 18-month long conflict has led to more than 30,000 deaths.

"Conditions in Syria continue to deteriorate as the Assad regime relentlessly wages war on its own people," Clinton said. "We see more bodies filling hospitals and morgues and we see more refugees fleeing their homeland and flooding into neighboring countries. The regime of Bashar al-Assad must come to an end so that the suffering of the Syrian people can stop and a new dawn can begin."

In Washington, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said new intelligence suggested the Syrian government has moved some of its chemical weapons in order to protect them, even though the U.S. believes that the main sites remain secure.

The new U.S. humanitarian assistance ? which brings America's total humanitarian contribution to more than $130 million since the crisis began ? will include food, water, blankets and medical services to victims of the violence. U.S. officials said on Thursday that an earlier shipment of medical goods provided by USAID had just arrived in southern Syria. The officials would not provide details of how the aid made it into Syrian territory.

The additional non-lethal support brings the total U.S. contribution in that area to nearly $40 million since the crisis began and includes 1,100 sets of communications equipment, including satellite-linked computers, telephones and cameras and training for more than 1,000 activists, students and independent journalists.

"We are working to help them strengthen their networks, avoid regime persecution and document human rights abuses," Clinton said. The U.S. is not providing military aid to the rebels although it acknowledges that other countries are.

Clinton's announcement came as fighting intensified in Syria's largest city, Aleppo, with the most widespread battles reported in three months in the city of 3 million people as rebel forces launched a new offensive against Assad.

Despite some battleground success, there have been complaints that the opposition is hopelessly splintered and unable to coalesce around a transition plan that was adopted by members of the U.N. Security Council in Geneva over the summer. Friday's meeting was intended in part to encourage better cooperation among Assad's foes.

"It is encouraging to see some progress toward greater opposition unity, but we all know there is more work to be done," Clinton said. U.S. officials have noted that revolutionary councils in cities including Damascus, Homs, Aleppo, Idlib and Deir al-Zour were becoming increasingly organized.

Members of local groups from across Syria and representatives of the exile group, the Syrian National Council ? including its head, Abdulbaset Sieda ? attended the meeting. But U.S. officials declined to name others taking part or let them be photographed, saying that doing so would risk putting those opponents of Assad in danger of reprisals.

The meeting was co-chaired by the Arab League. League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby lamented the U.N.'s inability to demand that the Geneva plan be implemented by threatening sanctions against those who would not abide by it.

"All of our efforts up to now have led to failures," he said. "We have not managed to change the situation."

Neither Russia nor China, which have vetoed three Western-backed resolutions aimed at pressuring Assad to end the violence and enter negotiations on a political transition, were invited to Friday's meeting.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov ? who was to address the General Assembly on Friday ? has accused the U.S. and other countries of encouraging terrorism in their stance on Syria.

However, Clinton told the meeting that the greatest threat to Syria, other than the Assad regime itself was Iran.

"Let's be very frank here," she said. "The regime's most important lifeline is Iran."

"There is no longer any doubt that Tehran will do whatever it takes to protect its proxy and crony in Damascus. Iran will do everything it can to evade international sanctions," Clinton said. She urged Syria's neighbors to take extra steps to ensure that Iran is not smuggling weapons and materiel into Syria through their airspace or territory.

Researchers determine how inflammatory cells function, setting stage for future remedies

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? A research team led by investigators at New York University and NYU School of Medicine has determined how cells that cause inflammatory ailments, such as Crohn's disease, multiple sclerosis, and arthritis, differentiate from stem cells and ultimately affect the clinical outcome of these diseases.

"We've found that hundreds of new genes are involved in the function and development of these cells," said co-author Richard Bonneau, an associate professor at New York University's Center for Genomics and Systems Biology and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. "This expansion in our understanding can be used as a framework for designing new therapies to combat a range of ailments where the immune system attacks self."

These cells, called T-cells by immunologists, play a role in fighting off infection, but can also induce inflammation and other processes that damage tissues and contribute to several common inflammatory diseases. T-cells are also key cell types in new immune-cell based therapies for fighting cancer. There are many types of T-cells, and how they differentiate from stem cells in the human body lies at the center of understanding several diseases.

"We have been striving for several years to understand what makes inflammatory T-lymphocytes special," said lead investigator Dan Littman, MD, PhD, the Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Professor of Molecular Immunology and a professor of pathology, microbiology and molecular pathogenesis at NYU School of Medicine and a faculty member of the Skirball Institute on Biomolecular Medicine. "They can protect us from microbes, but they also have the potential to cause autoimmune disease.

"We were fortunate to be able to bring together a team of immunologists, computational biologists, and genomics experts to begin to solve this puzzle. Whereas before we only knew of a handful of genes that influence the function of these cells, we now know of hundreds of new ones that can serve as a resource for further studies by us and other laboratories. Our hope is that some of these new molecules will be the Achilles heel that we can target to treat these diseases."

The findings, which are reported in the latest issue of the journal Cell, lay the groundwork for understanding how these cells regulate their genomes through a regulatory network that connects many environmental stimuli to a large number of genes and their interactions. This large network model is essentially the brain that T-cell precursors, or stem cells, use to decide what they want to be when they grow up. Specifically, a network model can be used simulate what inhibiting a gene with a drug would do to different T-cells and, in this way, aid the development of new therapeutic measures to address these afflictions.

The study focused on T-helper 17 cells (Th17) and how they regulate the synthesis of gene products from thousands of regions of the chromosome. Th17 cells have previously been implicated in inflammatory diseases. Other studies have also identified hundreds of genes that roles in pro-inflammatory diseases. This new study places these implicated genes on a timeline of cellular development and ultimately puts them together in an integrated model of how genes interact.

To explore the inner workings of these cells, the researchers used a systems biology approach, which focuses measuring multiple biomolecules and capturing multiple interactions within an organism to understand how it functions. For example, each of the 450 data sets integrated in this study contained measurements of gene expression, chromatin structure, or gene-chromosome interaction that spanned millions of locations along the genome. This holistic method offers a broader understanding of interconnected molecular phenomena essential to running life's program -- a process similar to studying an entire automobile while it functions rather than separately studying the headlights, brakes, or steering column.

To extract meaningful results from this very large data set, the researchers employed statistical techniques to uncover the network model from the large amount of data. To verify the accuracy of the computer modeling, further laboratory experiments were conducted using mice. Although the study was carried out in mice, the researchers found that their work could offer explanations as to why a large number of genes are associated with several human inflammatory diseases. The researchers' computer models identified candidate genes that influence the expression of more than 2,000 genes and play a significant role in the regulation of Th17 cells. They found that the core of this network was significantly enriched for the genes that human geneticists have found to be associated with pro-inflammatory disease. These genes serve as cogs in the regulation of expression or suppression of genes in Th17 cells and are potential leads for developing new therapeutic approaches to modulating inflammation.

Voice control may cut drivers' gizmo distractions

Michael Dunning / Getty Images

As motorists use a proliferating number of personal electronic devices while driving, scientists are looking for ways to reduce the distraction factor. One possibility is voice-control technology that may some day permit drivers to use the devices hands-free.

By Dan Carney, NBCNews contributor

As personal electronic devices have proliferated in cars, and with the corresponding increase in crashes resulting from motorists trying to drive while using those gadgets, automakers have touted voice control as the solution that will permit drivers to safely text, tweet and update their Facebook pages to inform the world of the amazing fact that they are in the act of driving to work.

The problem with the notion of voice control as a panacea for distraction is that it assumes that attempting to command electronic devices by voice is not distracting. ?It is a great concept, and used in the right way it can work well,? explained Bruce Mehler, a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is aware that poorly designed voice interfaces are distracting, so the agency has announced that it will issue rules for automobile voice-command systems in 2014. Until now, no one has determined what kind of system is less distracting and what is more distracting.

MIT researchers are working with Toyota?s Collaborative Safety Research Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. to find the answer to the issue.? Their first goal, according to CSRC senior principal engineer Jim Foley, is to establish the metrics that will measure the workload involved in the operation of a voice-command system.

This project?s overall goal is to produce some concrete information on what works and what doesn?t to help guide the federal rules when they come out.

To do this, the team has equipped a car with cameras to monitor drivers? eyes as they watch the road. Test subjects are also wired up with a heart-rate monitor and an instrument that measures galvanic skin response (like a lie detector) to assess their stress levels. Researchers will study the motorists while they perform tasks such as changing radio stations. The scientists will monitor the drivers while they are using physical controls and voice control.

The researchers also have a test in which they read off a list of numbers and the driver has to repeat a specific number from the list. Repeating the latest number produces a low strain on the brain. However, asking a driver to repeat the number that precedes the latest number cranks up the load on the brain to ?moderate?; when the driver is asked to recall the number that precedes that number, that results in a high cognitive workload.

This procedure allows researchers to measure the effects of hard work by the brain on driving skills, so when they find voice interface designs that apply a similar load, as demonstrated by the test subjects? heart rates and galvanic skin response, they can predict the deterioration in driving ability that will result.

In a simple reaction time test that takes the average driver about two-thirds of a second to respond under normal conditions, the same driver takes nearly a full second to respond when that motorist is called on to repeat the number before the most recent number read to him. At 60 mph, a car travels 29 feet during that additional third of a second, which underscores the need for quick response times.

Oil stems losses as Iran rhetoric heats up

BANGKOK (AP) ? The slide in the price of oil halted near $90 a barrel Thursday in Asia over renewed worries about oil supplies if military hostilities erupt over Iran's nuclear program.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 8 cents to $90.06 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.39 to finish at $89.98 per barrel on the Nymex on Wednesday.

Victor Shum, an energy analyst at consultancy Purvin & Gertz in Singapore, said harsh rhetoric over Iran's nuclear program and threats by Israel of military action against Iranian nuclear installations renewed worries about future oil supplies should an all-out conflagration erupt.

President Barack Obama told the U.N. General Assembly earlier this week that he wants to resolve the dispute through diplomacy but that the time to do so is "not unlimited." Obama also said the Iranian government has failed to demonstrate that its nuclear program is peaceful.

"Some of the comments from President Obama have caused some buying, causing oil to stabilize at around $90," Shum said.

Wednesday's drop in the oil price came as protests in Greece and Spain over spending cuts and tax hikes reminded traders of the debt crisis hobbling those countries and some others in Europe. Such austerity measures crimp the need for oil and oil products such as gasoline and diesel.

Brent crude fell 5 cents to $109.99 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

Other energy futures prices on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

? Heating oil fell 0.5 cents to $3.098 per gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline fell 1.2 cents to $3.069 per gallon.

? Natural gas fell 0.4 cents to $3.211 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Vegas books: $300M+ changed hands with NFL call

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Las Vegas oddsmakers say $300 million or more changed hands worldwide on a controversial referee call that decided the Monday Night Football game between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks.

Sports book chief Jay Kornegay said Tuesday that bettors at The LVH casino registered shock, some celebration, then anger when the outcome swung the game in favor of Seahawks bettors.

"We've seen regular refs blow calls. That's always been part of the sport," Kornegay said. "But this one was just a blatant bad call at the end of the game that decided the outcome of the game."

The Seahawks won 14-12 after referees ruled that Seattle receiver Golden Tate came down with the ball in a pile of bodies in the end zone after a Hail Mary pass on the play's last game.

The Glantz-Culver line for the game opened favoring the Packers by 4?. Had the final play been ruled an interception ? as many players, analysts and fans believed was the right call ? Green Bay would have won by 5 points.

The officials ruled on the field that Tate had simultaneous possession with Green Bay safety M.D. Jennings, which counts as a reception. The NFL upheld the call on Tuesday.

"I'm not complaining, but it did feel a little dirty," said Wesley Wong, 25, of Toronto, who said he had a combined $1,000 on the game on wagers on Seattle and a low scoring total.

Gambling expert RJ Bell of Las Vegas-based Pregame.com said an estimated two-thirds of bets worldwide were on the Packers, with about $150 million more bet on Green Bay than Seattle.

"Due to one call by the replacement refs, the bettors lost $150 million, and the bookie won $150 million for a total swing of $300 million on one debatably bad call," Bell said.

Mike Colbert, head oddsmaker for Cantor Gaming, which runs seven sports books in Las Vegas and provides betting lines to 90 percent of Nevada's casinos, said Cantor's books took in about 20 percent more money in bets than usual for a Monday night game after a wild weekend.

Wong said he made a last-minute parlay bet on Seattle and the under to try to make up for losses on Sunday.

Colbert said that as an NFL fan, he felt for bettors who lost because of the play even though his sports books won money.

"When everything went down, I gotta tell you, I was absolutely sick to my stomach," Colbert said.

Casinos had already begun to react to replacement officials before Week 3 began, predicting the most scoring ever across the league.

Now, adjustments for replacement referees that were only talked about previously are being factored into betting lines, Colbert said.

"We've seen it now," Colbert said. "If we do see trends and we see bets, we'll move more aggressively than we did in the past."

Teams normally get a 3-point edge factored into the line when they play at home. That home edge could be worth a half-point more with games refereed by replacement officials, depending on the game, Colbert said. Colbert said he believed the Monday night referees got caught up in the excitement of Seattle's home crowd.

"I'd be willing to make a big bet that if that game is in Green Bay, that play is overturned and they win it," he said.

Bettors are also reacting. Wong said he's wagering 20 percent less on NFL games than usual because of the unpredictability of the referees and other factors. He said his friends are cutting their bets in half or talking about avoiding NFL wagers for a few weeks if the replacement officials stay in.

"I'm willing to put less at risk at this point," Wong said. "I'm not motivated to put that much on the table."

Johnny Avello, race and sports director at the Wynn Las Vegas hotel-casino, said plays ? and mistakes ? happen each week throughout the year that decide the outcomes of bets. But this moment was magnified, he said, because it happened at the end of the game and the call single-handedly decided the outcome.

"If you're a bettor, it's going to be hard to get over," he said. "Some may back off, and that's yet to be seen."

Mwah! Kirstie gives Tom a big kiss on 'Dancing'

twitter.com

Tom Bergeron tweeted a photo of his big smooch after the show.

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

The wait is finally over! For years ballroom fans have clamored for an all-star season of "Dancing With the Stars," and on Monday night, they got it.

The premiere episode of the season saw host Tom Bergeron welcome back the batch of returning celebs -- made up mostly of past winners and finalists -- for the ultimate "Dancing" showdown. And in return, one star gave Tom quite a welcome too.

After performing a surprising fluid and graceful foxtrot -- and after receiving some surprisingly tough talk from the judges following it -- actress Kirstie Alley put her 19 points behind her and found something else to focus on -- Tom's mouth.

In what has to be the longest lip lock in history of "Dancing With the Stars," Kirstie delivered one heck of smooch to the host in honor of his first Primetime Emmy award, which he accepted the night before.

"Winning an Emmy certainly has its perks! Thanks, @KirstieAlley!" Tom tweeted after the show.

At least that unexpected gesture helped cheer the crowd, who had been busy booing the judges for their negative comments over a mostly positive dance.

But while Len Goodman and the gang seemed unduly harsh on some of the all-star cast, they also had plenty of praise for others, such as their pick for leading hoofer hopeful, Emmitt Smith.

The former "Dancing" champ and retired running back took the floor for a bold cha-cha-cha with pro Cheryl Burke. Wearing bright green shoes that drew attention to his footwork, Smith reminded fans and the panel how much charisma and smooth moves he packs.

Carrie Ann Inaba told him he was "born to dance," while Len simply called his moves the best of the evening. The 24.5-point score (yes, we have half points now) put Emmitt firmly at the top of the leader board.

Of course, fans may find that they have a different favorite for the evening. If reaction from the in-house audience (and yours truly) counts for much, actor Gilles Marini could claim that spot.

Trailing Emmitt in the all-star premiere by just a half of a point, Gilles' nearly flawless foxtrot with an old-Hollywood feel established him as one of the ones to watch. In season eight, he barely lost to winner Shawn Johnson, and if his first posture-perfect dance is anything to go by, he'll give her, Emmitt and the rest of the stars a real race for the mirror-ball this time around too.

As for Shawn, the fresh-from-retirement, gold-medal-winning gymnast (and TODAY.com "All-Stars" blogger) hit the floor with Derek Hough for a smooth, if not classic, foxtrot.? And while she said that she felt she was cheating on season-eight partner, Mark Ballas, by moving to the groove with Derek, her first dance was evidence that the match could be a big success. After all, his strong suit is complex chorography, and hers is following it.

While head judge Len felt the dance failed to "look like a foxtrot," Carrie Ann pointed out that it fit the style of an American Smooth Foxtrot, and the judges seemed to split the difference in scoring, giving her a total of 22 for the night.

Other early favorites include Cheetah Girl Sabrina Bryan, who delivered 22.5 points worth of hip shaking and pivots beside partner Louis Van Amstel with an impressive, if slightly intense, cha-cha-cha. And season-one winner Kelly Monaco also wowed with her unexpectedly scorching cha-cha-cha with Val Chmerkovskiy. Back in her debut season seven years ago, the ballroom bar was set lower and the show wrapped up in just six weeks. In fact, during her first time in the ballroom, Kelly didn't get around to the cha-cha-cha, making her 21.5 point performance even more impressive.

With so much top talent, the acts in the middle ranks might surprise some "Dancing" fans. Past winners and finalists -- such as Apolo Anton Ohno, Helio Castroneves, Drew Lachey and Melissa Rycroft -- all put on quality efforts, with scores grouped between 21 and 22 points. They're all close enough to the leading acts that a surge to the top of the leaderboard wouldn't exactly be a coup, but only time will tell who -- if any of them-- breaks out of the middle of the pack.

As for the rest of the acts, even one of those bringing up the rear had something to brag about on night one.

Bristol Palin's 19.5-point cha-cha-cha didn't reflect well on the leaderboard, but it did represent a massive improvement from the teen activist who went far despite frequently flubbed footwork in season 11. Sure, she still needs to work on her lines and on-stage personality, but when it comes to rump-shaking, she's got it down.

Actor and N'Sync alum Joey Fatone edged out Bristol point-wise with his 20.5 cha-cha-cha, and brought fun to the dance floor. But he'll have to bring better footwork and posture if he wants to go far. Maybe his playful rivalry with Apolo and fellow boybander Drew will help.

Pamela Anderson took the spot at the very bottom of the leaderboard with just 17 points for her problematic and oddly moody cha-cha. Carrie Ann offered the actress and former Playmate a criticism that she likely hasn't heard much of before: "The body wasn't quite there."

While some seasons kick off with a freebie week for the latest ballroom contenders, these dance-floor vets have no such advantage. The first elimination of the season takes place Tuesday night, and given the performances so far, it's hard to say who might waltz away in week one. If moves alone dictate that decision, Pam is a goner. But as "Dancing" fans know, it's not just about moves.

Fan base is the biggest factor in the early weeks, and we'll soon find out how that factors in this time.

Which returning celebrity brought the best moves to the ballroom on Monday night? Take our poll below and then share all your "Dancing" thoughts on our Facebook page.?Plus, join us on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. PT / 3:30 ET to chat about who you think might be going home!

Lebanese Christian leader says escapes assassination

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A Lebanese Christian political leader and ally of the Shi'ite group Hezbollah said he escaped an assassination attempt when his convoy came under fire in the south of the country.

Michel Aoun, head of the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM), was returning to Beirut on Saturday evening when one of the cars in his convoy was shot at in the mainly Sunni city of Sidon, a statement on the FPM website said.

"I have been exposed to three assassination attempts (in the past) and the perpetrators were discovered," the website quoted Aoun as saying. "This is the fourth and we hope they will be revealed."

Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said a shot was fired at one of several decoy vehicles driving slightly in advance of the convoy carrying Aoun himself. The bullet passed close to one of the people in the car, Charbel told Reuters.

"We are awaiting the outcome of investigations" into who was responsible for the gunfire, Charbel said.

A spokesman for Prime Minister Najib Mikati said the premier had called Aoun after the incident from New York, where he has travelled to attend a U.N. General Assembly meeting. Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah also spoke to Aoun.

The attack on Aoun's convoy is the latest reported threat to prominent politicians in Lebanon, where tensions over the uprising in neighboring Syria against President Bashar al-Assad have polarized chronic sectarian and political rifts.

Two other Christian politicians, Samir Geagea and Boutros Harb, have said they were targets earlier this year. Geagea said shots were fired at his home in northern Lebanon in April and Harb said security forces found a bomb in the lift of his office building in July.

Aoun's largely Christian FPM is allied with the pro-Assad Hezbollah in Mikati's government, while Geagea and Harb are both staunchly anti-Assad.

Other politicians including Shi'ite parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri and Druze leader Walid Jumblatt have been warned about threats against them, political sources have said.

Former prime minister Saad al-Hariri, whose father was assassinated in a 2005 Beirut bombing, has been living outside Lebanon for nearly a year and a half, partly due to fears for his security.
