Toddlers and Newborns | The Parent Report

Toddler and newborns. Tips for keeping jealousy at bay.

Toddlers and Newborns

Introducing a toddler to a newborn can be quite a challenge.? After all, until now your toddler may well have been the one and only and little did she think there?d be competition.? While how a toddler responds to a new baby can be as varied as toddlers themselves, there are ways you can help ease your young child into this very big life change, says Kaz Cooke author of Kid Wrangling.

?I think the best thing you can do when bringing home a new baby is to prepare your toddler as much as possible, and to give them a role. Often people will give a toddler a doll and perhaps practice and pretend that it?s their baby, so that they?ve got their baby and then Mommy?s got the new baby. And I know that it does help a lot of people once the new baby has come, for someone else, a dad or a gramma, to take the baby so that the mom has absolutely one-on-one time with that toddler so they don?t feel too left out.?

Afraid of Negotiating? Just Consider It Expected of You

Afraid of Negotiating? Just Consider It Expected of YouMany of us shy away from negotiating, even though not negotiating could cost you thousands of dollars on your salary, next car, or other big-ticket item. To feel more comfortable and confident negotiating, consider it expected of you.

The DailyWorth financial blog notes that many companies significantly mark up their items just so there's room to negotiate. These include furniture stores (80% or more mark up) and jewelry stores (as much as 200% mark up). Even nursing homes are willing to compromise on price. While not every store or service will be open to negotiating, these examples suggest that you shouldn't fear looking like a tightwad if you try to bargain.

The article also cites a recent study that showed when salary is described as negotiable, job applicants were more likely to pursue salary discussions. (This was true even for women, who typically don't negotiate salary as much as men do.)

So if you're nervous about negotiating something, just think of it as something you're supposed to do. For tips on getting started, see the source article below or our previous negotiating tips.

Cell scaffolding protein fascin-1 is hijacked by cancer

Feb. 22, 2013 ? A protein involved in the internal cell scaffold is associated with increased risk of metastasis and mortality in a range of common cancers finds a meta-analysis published in Biomed Central's open access journal BMC Medicine.

The protein, fascin-1, is involved in bundling together the actin filaments which form the internal scaffolding of a cell and are involved in cell movement. Though it is absent, or only present at a low level in normal epithelial cells, several small studies have shown fascin-1 to be increased in many carcinomas, but its role in metastasis and mortality risk has been uncertain.

Researchers from the University of Bristol combined and reanalysed data from 26 studies looking at five different types of carcinomas. The meta-analysis showed that increased fascin-1 was associated with increased risk of mortality in breast, colorectal and esophageal carcinomas but not in gastric or lung carcinoma. It was also associated with disease progression in breast and colorectal carcinoma, but not lung carcinoma. It was associated with local and distant metastasis in colorectal and gastric carcinomas but there was no involvement of fascin-1 in metastasis of esophageal carcinomas.

These results show that the picture is not simple and that different types of cancer are affected in different ways. The story of fascin-1 not only provides a biomarker and potential avenue for research into anti-cancer therapy but also demonstrates the complexity of cancer.

Josephine Adams and Richard Martin who led this study said, "Our results show that fascin-1 is associated with several types of human carcinomas. The results will help focus further research into fascin-1 as a marker and potential target for cancer therapy to the most relevant types of carcinomas."

Wisconsin woman pleads no contest to baby's death in 1957

(Reuters) - A 76-year-old Wisconsin woman pleaded no contest on Monday to a murder charge in the 1957 death of her infant daughter under a plea deal with prosecutors who recommended she be sentenced to 45 days in jail.

By pleading no contest, Ruby Klokow of Sheboygan admitted to having recklessly but unintentionally caused the death of her daughter Jeaneen, Sheboygan County District Attorney Joe DeCecco said.

Klokow was charged in 2011 with second-degree murder under a 1957 statute, which is similar to first-degree reckless homicide under current law, DeCecco said. It was the only charge from 1957 that fit the facts and did not have a statute of limitations, he said.

Klokow had told police in 1957 that Jeaneen, who was less than a year old, had fallen off a sofa but family members suspected otherwise, he said. Klokow's son James, who was about 2 years old at the time of his sister's death, went to police with his suspicions in 2008.

After the case was reopened, Klokow admitted that she had been frustrated and angry at the time. Both James and Jeaneen were crying and she had picked the girl up and threw her toward the sofa, but she bounced off and struck the floor, he said.

A pathologist also determined that Jeaneen's injuries could not have been caused merely by falling off a couch, DeCecco said.

"The crime happened 56 years ago ... she is in ill-health and our main aim was to help the son be vindicated. He had indicated that he had been blamed for the death of his sister," DeCecco said.

Klokow entered the plea on Monday in an appearance before Sheboygan County Judge Angela Sutkiewicz, according to court records. Sentencing has been set for April 15. Sutkiewicz does not have to go along with the prosecution's recommendation for a 45-day sentence.

While the plea deal calls for a jail sentence, Klokow most likely would serve that time at home on electronic monitoring, DeCecco said. The agreement also calls for 10 years probation.

"She did acknowledge that she has felt guilty all of these years," Klokow's attorney, Kirk Obear, told reporters in an interview posted on the Sheboygan Press website after the plea.

"She has felt remorseful, she has felt responsible for her daughter's death and that all came out," Obear said.

Include video in your PR strategy | Public Relations Sydney

Using video for communication is becoming increasingly popular with more businesses realising the power of video to reach their target audience.

YouTube is currently the second largest search engine, after Google, with 800 million unique users per month. This means there is a large number of people watching and engaging with videos every day, which your business should be taking advantage of.?

It?s then a great idea to include video in your PR strategy to communicate a message in a different way and increase engagement with your audience.

Here are some tips on how you can make the most of video for PR.

Get more people to see your website
You can put videos on your website to increase your search engine optimisation.

Research has shown that a web page with a video on it is 53 times more likely to appear on the first page of Google results. This means if you want more people to see your messages you should include a video on your website. This will help to attract more potential customers to your website and enhance the effectiveness of your communication.

Engagement
Videos are a great way to increase your engagement with your target audience. Often people would rather watch a video then read through a block of text as it allows them to receive information faster. Studies have also shown people will spend more time on a website with a video on it then one with text.

You can include videos on your website, social media sites or blog to encourage people to spend more time on your site and look at your content. This is a great way to communicate in a different way and encourage your target audience to respond.

When communicating with your target audience, rather than describing something with words you can show them with a video. This can increase your target audience?s interest in your communication and make it easier for them to receive your message. This is especially beneficial if you have a complicated message to communicate.?

Speaking pitches
When pitching for a speaking opportunity it?s a good idea to include a video of the speaker. This could be a link to a video on YouTube or by providing event organisers with a USB full of videos of the speaker.

Videos are a great way to showcase the presentation style of the speaker, their presence on stage and their ability to engage an audience. This can often be more effective than trying to describe their presentation style in writing.

Event organisers can also see real evidence of the speaker?s skills and may be more likely to choose them for the event.

Media pitches
Many media publications and online news sites now use video to communicate. It?s then a great idea to include video in your pitches to journalists to take advantage of this medium. For example, you could include a video with a media release or with an email pitch to a journalist.

Video is great when launching a new product as you can use it to show a journalist how the product works. You can also use video to document a press conference or a major event for the business and then send this video to a journalist to use.?

Social media
Using video on social media is an effective way to communicate a message in a different and engaging way.? As videos are easy to share online your social media followers may share your video with their networks. This can help to spread your message to a wider audience and increase your brand awareness.

Create a YouTube channel
You can create a YouTube Channel to publish your videos. As YouTube is the second largest search engine, publishing your videos on this channel is a great way to get more people to see them. This can increase your brand awareness or improve your communication.

Once you?ve posted videos on YouTube it?s then easier to share them on other sites such as your website or social media channels.

Creating videos for your business is a great way to communicate a message, increase engagement with your target audience and improve your website?s SEO.

How does your business use video to communicate?

Pistorius' brother facing culpable homicide charge

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? The brother of Olympic star Oscar Pistorius is facing a culpable homicide charge for a 2008 road death, compounding problems for the family after the double-amputee runner was charged with premeditated murder in the Feb. 14 shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Lawyer Kenny Oldwage said in a statement that Carl had been involved in a car accident "in which a woman motorcyclist sadly lost her life." He said that "there is no doubt that Carl is innocent and the charge will be challenged in court."

Carl Pistorius was already in court last Thursday, as his brother Oscar was facing a bail hearing, and will appear again at the end of next month.

Oscar Pistorius was released on bail Friday and his brother Carl was seen driving into the home of their uncle Arnold early Sunday in Waterkloof, an affluent suburb of Pretoria, the nation's capital, where Oscar is now staying.

The problems surrounding his older brother Carl are the latest twist in a case that has transfixed South Africa and much of the world. Sunday's revelation of the culpable homicide charge immediately created a stir.

"It's also doubly sad because it's involved with Oscar and his brother and all the family ? so they have double sort of trouble. So, not good," said Johannesburg resident Jim Plester.

Oldwage said that "Carl deeply regrets the accident" and that a blood test showed he was not drunk at the time. "It was a tragic road accident after the deceased collided with Carl's car."

He said the charges had initially been dropped, only to be reinstated later.

Oscar Pistorius was charged with premeditated murder, but the athlete says he killed his girlfriend accidentally, opening fire after mistaking her for an intruder in his home.

On Saturday, the family took steps to lower its profile on social media after someone hacked into the Twitter account of Carl. They cancelled all the social media sites for both Oscar's brother and his sister Aimee.

Carl has always been close to Oscar but was notably absent when their uncle Arnold, flanked by Oscar's sister Aimee, read out a first reaction to the shooting on Feb. 17, even though he was also on the premises.

The three-story house where Pistorius is staying with his aunt and uncle sits on a hill with a sweeping view of Pretoria. It has a large swimming pool and an immaculate garden.

The character of Pistorius also continued to take center stage. For many, it mirrors his public appearances as an articulate, well-spoken advocate for Paralympic athletes facing hardship. Witness statements backing up Oscar Pistorius as a down-to-earth guy were presented at the hearing.

Others have described him as a reckless risk taker who has been in trouble before, such as a boat accident in 2009 which put him into hospital intensive care unit.

On Sunday, a South African man who said Steenkamp had stayed at his home since September, described Pistorius as moody and impatient. Cecil Myers, whose daughter was close friends with Steenkamp, said in an interview published Sunday in the City Press newspaper, that Pistorius will have the killing of Steenkamp on his conscience. "I hope he gets a long sentence. Gets what he deserves," said Myers.

"Very nice and charming to us when they started dating," said Myers. Myers said Pistorius initially used to come into the house but later just dropped Steenkamp off and picked her up when they began to date steadily, and he described the change as a lack of respect.

Myers recalled their first date and told the newspaper: "After that he wouldn't leave her alone. He kept pestering her, phoning and phoning and phoning her."

According to Myers, Steenkamp "told me he pushed her a bit into a corner. She felt caged in."

Myers said he told Pistorius "not to force himself on her. Back off." He said that after initially agreeing with him, it appeared that Pistorius soon took no heed.

Pistorius was born without fibula bones due to a congenital defect and his legs were amputated when he was 11 months old. He has run on carbon-fiber blades and was originally banned from competing against able-bodied peers because many argued that his blades gave him an unfair advantage. He was later cleared to compete. He is a multiple Paralympic medalist, and won a silver medal at the 2011 Daegu world championships with South Africa's 4x400 relay team. But he failed to win a medal at the London Olympics, where he ran in the 400 meter race and the 4x400 relay race.

African leaders sign deal aimed at peace in eastern Congo

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - African leaders signed a U.N.-mediated deal on Sunday aimed at ending two decades of conflict in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo and paving the way for the deployment of a new military brigade to take on rebel groups.

Congo's army is fighting the M23 rebels, who have hived off a fiefdom in North Kivu province in a conflict that has dragged Congo's eastern region back into war and displaced more than half a million people.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who witnessed the signing in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, said he hoped the accord would bring "an era of peace and stability" for Congo and Africa's Great Lakes, and added that he would soon name a special envoy for the region.

The Great Lakes area, where colonial era borders cut through ethnic groups, has in the last 20 years been a crucible of conflict that has launched multiple uprisings and invasions.

"It is only the beginning of a comprehensive approach that will require sustained engagement," Ban said of the accord, which did not include any representatives of rebel groups.

The agreement was signed by leaders and envoys of 11 African countries, including Rwanda and Uganda, which have been accused by U.N. experts of stoking the rebellion. They deny the accusation.

Speaking after the signing, Ugandan Vice President Edward Ssekandi said the deal could speed up the deployment of a new, U.N.-flagged intervention force to take on the rebels.

"We should be able to fast-track the ongoing consultation so that the force, with a robust mandate and capability, is put in place," he said.

African leaders failed to sign the deal last month after a disagreement over who would command the force.

The U.N. Security Council welcomed the signing of the deal on Sunday and called on Ban to keep the 15-member body informed of its implementation and any breaches of the commitments.

"The members of the Security Council remain deeply concerned by the worsening security and humanitarian situation in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo," the council said in a statement.

A fresh rebellion launched in May 2012 by the M23 group has brought more fighting and displacement to eastern Congo. In November the rebels seized the provincial capital Goma, but left the city to open the way for peace talks, which are being held in neighboring Uganda.

REBEL DEMANDS

Those separate talks between Congo's government and the rebels are aimed at reaching an agreement on a range of economic, political and security issues, including amnesty for "war and insurgency acts", the release of political prisoners and reparation of damages due to the war.

But the rebels have broadened their goals to include the removal of Congolese President Joseph Kabila and "liberation" of the entire Congo.

Bertrand Bisimwa, M23's spokesman said he had not read the full details of the Addis Ababa deal, but hoped it would not reignite fighting between them and government troops.

"What I can say is that if they are choosing the way of peace we are fine with that, but if they are choosing to continue the war then we're against," he told Reuters.

Uganda's Ssekandi said the talks in Kampala were now focused on security and that their discussions were so far positive.

Kabila said the talks with rebels would continue, but there was little time left before a March 15 deadline to complete them.

"What we have done in Addis is just a diplomatic measure. The discussions in Kampala will continue but we need to pay attention to the fact that we do not have a lot of time," Kabila told a news conference after signing the deal.

ADDIS DEAL NOT THE END

Successive cross-border conflicts have killed and uprooted millions in the Congo basin since the colonial era, driven by political and ethnic divisions and competition for vast mineral resources like gold, tin, tungsten and coltan - a precious metal used to make mobile phones.

Rwanda's President Paul Kagame said Sunday's deal should not be taken as an end in itself, but as part of continuing peace process.

"At the heart of our efforts, we have to keep in mind the rights, interests and aspirations of the afflicted populations, caught up in the recurring waves of violence," he said.

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, welcomed the agreement and called on the Congo government to build on the deal to restore authority in the east.

In an apparent reference to the role of Rwanda and Uganda, Rice said in a statement: "It is equally imperative that the DRC's neighbors respect its sovereignty and territorial integrity by preventing external support to armed groups, which is a violation of international obligations."

Theodore Trefon, a regional analyst and author of the book "Congo Masquerade", said he believed the Addis agreement and the stalled peace talks in Kampala had failed to look for long-term solutions or tackle underlying grievances which had stoked violence in the region.

"You're not going to be able to impose peace from above or the outside on people who don't want peace. Lots of local actors have hidden agendas," he told Reuters from Brussels.

U.S. U-20s defeat Costa Rica, win group to set up quarterfinal meeting with Canada

Thanks to Jose Villarreal and Luis Gil, the U.S. U-20s are one step closer to this summer?s World Cup, with the team?s 1-0 win over Costa Rica on Friday giving the team Group A at the CONCACAF tournament in Puebla, Mexico. Now the team faces a in-and-in Tuesday against Canada in the competition?s quarterfinals.

The four quarterfinal victors will clinch spots in the 2012 U-20 World Cup, which begins in Turkey on June 21.

The U.S. had already clinched a place in the knockout round after Haiti lost to Costa Rica on Wednesday. With the victory over the Ticos, the U.S., winners of Group A, avoided the first place team in Group B. Costa Rica gets that honor, slated to play Cuba on Tuesday.

Friday?s only goal came early in the second half when Gil lofted a corner into the middle of the area. Villarreal rose uncontested to head a shot toward Jairo Monge?s goal line, the Costa Rican keeper unable to react to a well-headed ball that became the game?s only score.

Gil now has a goal and an assist in the tournament having scored in the third minute of Monday?s 2-1 victory over Haiti.

Per U.S. Soccer?s report, head coach Tab Ramos deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation against Costa Rica, a setup that featured Villarreal at its tip. Gil, Sporting KC draftee Mikey Lopez, Columbus prospects Shane O?Neill and Wil Trapp, and Chivas USA defender Juan Pablo Ocegueda were other Major League Soccer representatives in the U.S.?s starting lineup.

The tournament continues Saturday with Jamaica facing Panama while Mexico takes on El Salvador. All four teams, having already clinched spots in the quarterfinals, are jockeying for position in the knockout round.

'Parade's End' keeps British TV invasion going

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Tom Stoppard is sitting on the patio of a Sunset Boulevard hotel, bathed in California winter sunshine, framed by bamboo landscaping and looking very much out of his element in Hollywood.

The acclaimed British playwright professes to feeling that way as well, despite having pocketed a Writers Guild of America lifetime achievement award the night before for his screenplays, including the Oscar-winning "Shakespeare in Love."

"I was always nervous coming here. The first time I was terrified," he said. "I'm trying not to sound nauseatingly self-deprecating, but I don't think of myself as being a terrific screenwriter or even a natural screenwriter."

Combine that, he said, with the local entertainment industry's perception that "I'm some different kind of animal," a high-minded artist to whom the words "intellectual" and "philosophy" are freely applied.

But if Hollywood can be forgiven anything, it should be that. Stoppard has created a remarkable wealth of two dozen-plus plays, including "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead," "Travesties" and "The Real Thing," and he's counting on more.

He looks like a proper man of letters, with unkempt gray hair, a comfortably unstylish cardigan and a delicately shaped mouth that hesitates, slightly, before dispensing exacting thoughts on the art of writing (without pretension: he relishes a snippet of "Ghostbusters" dialogue.)

Stoppard also is the master behind "Parade's End," a five-part HBO miniseries (airing Tuesday through Thursday, 9 p.m. EST) that was lauded by U.K. critics as "the thinking man's `Downton Abbey'" after its BBC airing.

Adapted by Stoppard from a series of novels by British writer Ford Madox Ford, "Parade's End" features rising stars Benedict Cumberbatch ("Sherlock Holmes" and the upcoming "Star Trek" movie) and Rebecca Hall ("Vicky Cristina Barcelona") in the juiciest of roles.

Like PBS' "Downton Abbey," it's set in the early 20th century among aristocrats and encompasses World War I's shattering effect on the social order. Romance is provided by the triangle of Cumberbatch's tradition-bound Christopher, his unfaithful wife, Sylvia (Hall), and a suffragette (Australian newcomer Adelaide Clemens). The uniformly impressive cast includes Janet McTeer, Miranda Richardson, Roger Allam and Rupert Everett.

Stoppard rejects the oft-made comparison to PBS' "Downton" as unfair to it and its writer-creator, Julian Fellowes: "I was embarrassed by it because it's so condescending of Julian's work. He's a good writer and he's done a superlative job," he said. It's also a misguided comparison because "Downton" is heading toward season four and "Parade's End" is "five episodes and that's it, forever."

The self-effacing Stoppard leaves it at that. But there's a wider gap between the two: "Downton" is an easy-to-digest soap opera, while "Parade's End" is a challenging, nuanced view of a slice of British society and a set of singular characters, all dressed to the nines in the heady language of literature.

"There's a wonderful richness to the language and a beauty, which I think is the brilliance of Tom Stoppard, and also this very beautiful language of Ford Madox Ford," said director Susanna White.

The heedless, acid-tongued Sylvia has dialogue to relish, something Stoppard cannot resist.

"The line I like best comes straight from Ford: (the public) likes `a whiff of sex coming off our crowd, like the steam on the water in the crocodile house at the zoo,'" he said, adding gleefully, "What a line!"

Although careful to credit the novelist with that particular zinger, Stoppard said "Parade's End" is the first adaptation in which his dialogue and that from the original text have become intertwined in his memory.

He attributes that to the year he spent forming Ford's intricate novels into a screenplay, often crafting original scenes, and the several more years he spent helping bring the series to fruition with the producers and White ("Generation Kill").

"It's the closest thing to writing a play which isn't a play that I have ever been involved with," he said.

The stage has been the Czech-born Stoppard's chief occupation since leaving journalism in his 20s. But he's made a number of detours into film, either as a screenwriter or a behind-the-scenes script doctor. His latest big-screen project is the adaptation of "Anna Karenina" with Keira Knightley.

Stoppard's insistence that he isn't an outstanding scriptwriter stems, in part, from his reticence. Then there's what he calls the differing "schools of eloquence" represented by film and plays.

"I envy and admire movies which are eloquent without recourse to long speeches," he said, citing several lines to illustrate his point. One comes from "The Fugitive" ("I don't care," Tommy Lee Jones says after Harrison Ford insists he didn't kill his wife), another from "Ghostbusters."

Bill Murray is confronted by "this kind of Amazonian ghost goddess, spooky thing, and he goes, `This chick is toast,'" Stoppard said, with a delighted smile.

"It's the sense that precisely the right words have been uttered," he explained.

That's how fellow scribes feel about him. One L.A. film and TV writer said she regularly rereads the famed cricket-bat speech from "The Real Thing," about the challenge of writing, for joy and inspiration: "If you get it right," the character Henry says, "the cricket ball will travel two hundred yards in four seconds, and all you've done is give it a knock like knocking the top off a bottle of stout, and it makes a noise like a trout taking a fly. What we're trying to do is to write cricket bats, so that when we throw up an idea and give it a little knock, it might travel."

For now, the right words for Stoppard would be those of a new play, the first since "Rock `n' Roll" from seven years ago. He has no regrets about immersing himself in "Parade's End," but is ready for the solitude needed to find the right story for the stage.

He used to steal away to a house in France until the air travel became too much. Now he makes do with a "small, shabby cottage an hour-and-a-half from London, which in theory is supposed to be my French house. But it's not far enough away" to evade commitments, social and otherwise. ("I'm Mr. Available," he laments.)

It's welcome assurance to hear the guild lifetime award he received Feb. 17 doesn't signal a halt for Stoppard. It did pull him up short, at least briefly.

"I was quite surprised. Though I am 75, so I shouldn't be surprised. But I haven't thought of stopping yet."

Mark Cuban has some suggestions for improving NBA Slam Dunk Contest

The NBA Slam Dunk Contest is not exactly getting better as the years go on. Despite the efforts of some of their fellow players, superstars rarely ever feel inclined to participate in the event anymore. Since convincing high-profile players to partake clearly isn?t working, Mark Cuban has some other ideas.

?Star power helps,? Cuban told the Dallas Morning News. ?But I think you can add some technology to it. You add a height meter, a distance meter, just simple things, where it makes it more entertaining on TV.

?Because the tech(nology) is there to measure it in real time. And then you include that in the score. So more guys are going to try to jump from the free-throw line. More guys are going to try to get up. That will add to the excitement. ?Who can jump the highest? Who can jump the furthest?? And it will all be there in real time, so you can?t back away from it.?

I like it. We wrote a few years back that it is crucial for more superstars to start competing in the Dunk Contest for it to be?enjoyable? but that clearly isn?t going to happen. There were a few exciting dunks over the weekend in Houston, but there were also too many misses that made the competition feel like it was dragging out. Measuring how high and far participants are jumping would certainly add a new element to the contest.

?Look, you?ve got to remember who?s there and who?s watching it,? Cuban continued. ?Kids, kids, kids, kids. Not you guys (media). When you go to the All-Star game, it?s everybody taking their kids. When you go Saturday night, Friday night, it?s everybody taking their kids. They?re not nearly as critical when they go, ?Ooh. Daddy, can we have some more popcorn? Aah. Can we get a T-shirt? That?s their level of criticism.?

Players seem to be running out of ideas and ways to be creative. Using technology like Cuban is talking about could only help. And once again, the Cubes comes up with a good business idea.

German Catholics allow morning-after pill in rape cases

BERLIN (Reuters) - The Roman Catholic Church in Germany said on Thursday it would permit certain types of "morning-after pill" for raped women, after two hospitals provoked an outcry for refusing to treat a rape victim.

The German Bishops' Conference said church-run hospitals would now ensure proper medical, psychological and emotional care for rape victims - including administering pills that prevent pregnancy without inducing an abortion.

Archbishop Robert Zollitsch said a four-day meeting of German bishops in the western town of Trier had "confirmed that women who have been victims of rape will get the proper human, medical, psychological and pastoral care".

"That can include medication with a 'morning-after pill' as long as this has a prophylactic and not an abortive effect," he said in a statement. "Medical and pharmaceutical methods that induce the death of an embryo may still not be used."

That means there is no change to the Catholic Church's ban on the so-called abortion pill based on the drug mifepristone or RU-486, and marketed as Mifegyne or Mifeprex.

The Church remains firmly opposed to abortion and artificial birth control, but in Germany it will now differentiate between pills that prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg in the womb and pills that induce an abortion, in cases of rape.

The German church, which has already faced mass desertions over cases of sexual abuse of children by priests, had been expected to change its position on the morning-after pill after apologizing about an incident involving two hospitals in Cologne last month.

The critical German lay movement "Wir sind Kirche" (We are the Church) said bishops took the decision because they feared losing state subsidies for church hospitals. The Catholic Church runs 25 percent of German hospitals and half of those in North Rhine-Westphalia state, which includes Cologne, it said.

Cologne's Cardinal Joachim Meisner, an ally of the outgoing German-born Pope Benedict, has already apologized for the church hospitals' treatment of the woman. He said it "shames us deeply because it contradicts our Christian mission and our purpose".

The 25-year-old woman was referred to the hospitals by her doctor for a gynecological exam after she was drugged at a party and woke up on a park bench fearing she had been raped.

The hospitals refused to treat her because they could not prescribe the pill, which is taken after sex to avoid pregnancy. She was eventually treated at a Protestant church-run hospital.

The German bishops' meeting in Trier also tried to address criticism of sexual discrimination by the Church by vowing to include more women in leadership positions, although this will not include the ordination of women as priests.

More than 181,000 German Catholics left the Church in 2010 and a further 126,000 the following year, reducing the total number to 24.47 million in a total population of 82 million.

Feel free to use this article on your site as long as all the links are kept live. The strength of the male orgasm can greatly change each and every single time you touch him. Statistics On Successful Long Distance Relationships sometimes when you touch him it feels amazing and other times it doesn?t do much for him.

Humans will always be humans. Everyone has their own bad habits and not a perfect with only the good ones. Keep in mind that your partner is not prince charming but the man you want to be with for eternity. Love is about accepting flaws and not having to say you are sorry that fate had brought you together. Keeping a man is simple:

  • So the next time you are tempted to tell yourself you should look a certain way remind yourself that you are an original
  • If you have just started dating someone or even if you have been dating someone for a while withdrawing from the relationship a little would create a feeling in the man that he doesnt have you completely yet
  • The reason for that is if you turn into a depressing person you are only going to reconfirm his thoughts that he is better off without you
  • Jackets made for men generally have the button holes on the left side of the jacket and the buttons on the right side
  • Tears make a man more concerned to his girl while the relationship is okay but it?s opposite when he is trying to move away

. You just got to learn to accept him for what and who he really is.

Let him hear things that he would have never thought he would hear coming out of your mouth. Try not to cross that line though where it gets to be too dirty. If you do that you can turn him off just as quickly as you turned him on.

As a result women along with men usually suffer from some form of a poor body image at one time in their life. However don?t despair. You don?t have to live with this condition. A poor body image can be overcome by following a few simple rules. Rule #1 ? view advertisements with a critical eye Let?s face it.

So how to make him fall in love with you? Be ready to accept his love with no conditions and no hold backs. If you love him but dont know how to ?love? him love him in small steps. Breaking Up is Hard for You When your ex repeatedly tells you no for getting back together it is time to move on. You should never waste your time on someone who obviously does not care for you as you care for them. It can also lead to self esteem issues that can be problematic later on.

It could be something as simple as you shut Statistics On Successful Long Distance Relationships down emotionally or the two of you yelled instead of discussed. If it is something that you can fix such as improving yourself go ahead and do that and see where it gets you. Trying to make a man fall in love with YOU as a woman can seem like a pretty tall task.

You are about to discover an ultimate secret weapon which will make a man FEEL ATTRACTED and MORE INTERESTED in you for the long term. Even If You Are Bald Fat or Ugly! . Trust me. You dont want to miss this one. I strongly urge you to visit ********************************************************** The point is we have in all probability spent the final ten minutes discussing no matter if or not we fancy them no matter if they?re heading to consult to see us again and irrespective of whether they genuinely bring in as significantly as we feel they do. Fine so maybe we also needed anyone to share make-up with but that?s not commonly our prime motive. Reality three ? We spend as well a great deal time browsing.

He has a mother and you can never take her place. You can introduce him to the finer things in life but you cant make him like them. Tip 2 Dont Be One of the Guys Dont be one of the boys with your man.

Keep the lines of communication open. Treat him like your best friend with benefits. You need to talk openly if you want the relationship to last.

He may not be Mr. Perfect but you need to notice positive things in his behavior in his efforts in his appearance and in the things that he owns so that you can let him know that you noticed and you appreciate that thing about him. If you can aim to cut down your negative criticisms so that out of every 4 encouragements you have only 1 criticism then he will begin to feel warmer towards you and to be interested in you and in your relationship. Be deliberately positive. To keep a man interested in a relationship he has to feel loved and appreciated so make up your mind that you will view him positively. Believe that he loves you and wants to do what is best for you.

It?s sometimes hard to manage your feelings when your man chooses time with his friends over you. The same can be said if he is passionate about his career or a hobby. It?s very important that you allow him some breathing room though so he can be himself.

Independence is good. But if you want your man to take you seriously make him feel that you need him on some level. Men love the feeling when women come to them for help.

If you have other things that you need to attend to don?t hesitate to let him down once in a while. You can?t always make yourself available for him outside a proper commitment. The best way on how to make him commit is so show him exactly what he?s missing. He knows that you don?t have to answer to him because you?re not in THAT kind of relationship. Clue him in on how he can be part of your life Keeping him at arm?s length is fine so long as he understands why you?re doing it. You want to clue him in on the reason why you cancel his invites. Make him understand that the only way for him to be part of your busy social calendar is for him to think about where he wants to take your relationship with him.

Every guy is at least part Bad Boy and in The Manual this prime specimen reveals what every woman needs to know to counter Bad Boy tactics both amateur and professional. Steve is never condescending or callous but honest perceptive and street-smart. His guidance is straightforward and his insights are dead-on giving women tools they can immediately put to work.

He will appreciate this a lot and stay interested Give him the challenge he craves for Most men want to be challenged and excited. They want to be stimulated to the point where they can be motivated. No doubt your man loved the chase but once he caught you ? has he displayed you as a ?trophy? and left it at that? Keep him wanting to catch you over and over! Be in control of your emotions You can be sure that your man will soon lose interest in you if you are a woman who cannot control your emotions. This is because most men cannot handle the drama trauma and the scenes that arise! Have enough of self control and show him that you are mature. He will love this sort of Statistics On Successful Long Distance Relationships behavior.

This role can also extend to the bedroom-you can go ahead and be whatever he wants you to be-a goddess the secretary an actress?anybody at all. Keep him full. Feed him always with the foods that he loves. Reaching his heart is treading the path through his stomach. It?s good to share moments together while you both enjoy a delicious meal that was prepared by you. Be emotionally strong. Don?t be like a drama queen who can readily burst into tears.

Maintaining a healthy social life will reach his ears and make him wonder how you can still meet the same people you both used to Statistics On Successful Long Distance Relationships hang out with. This will challenge his ego. Then he will start investigating and apparently knocking at your door. 7. Avoid mentioning the past. Does any one enjoy listening to a broken record? Men hate feeling guilty so stop making him remember the time when he tore you to pieces. Make him realize that the experience has made you a better person.

Mississippi newspaper owner defends gay marriage cover story

(The Laurel Leader-Call)

A newspaper in rural Mississippi is defending its decision to run a cover story on what it called the first same sex marriage in the county it serves.

On Feb. 7, the Laurel Leader-Call published the story--"Historic Wedding: Women wed in Laurel through smiles, tears"--about the wedding of Jessica Powell and Crystal Craven, who has been battling brain cancer. The women exchanged vows earlier this month at a ceremony in Laurel, Miss., attended by family, friends and Craven's doctors.

"If chemo doesn't work, we don't know what happens after that," Craven told the paper.

"This is true love," Powell said. "Love is love, it knows no gender."

She added: "I don't remember voting on straight marriage, so why is gay marriage an issue?"

The story sparked a backlash among readers in a state that does not legally recognize same sex marriage.

"We shouldn't have to defend every decision we make here at the Leader-Call," Jim Cegielski, the paper's owner, wrote in an editorial published on Saturday. "However, the intense reaction to our gay wedding front page story, which led to a deluge of hate calls, letters. e-mails, Facebook posts, soundoffs and random cross stares thrown in my direction, warrants some sort of response. So here it is."

Cegielski continued:

We were well aware that the majority of people in Jones County are not in favor of gay marriage. However, any decent newspaper with a backbone can not base decisions on whether to cover a story based on whether the story will make people angry.

The job of a community newspaper is not pretending something didn't take place or ignoring it because it will upset people. No, our job is to inform reads what is going on in our own and let them make their own judgments. That is exactly what we did with the wedding story. Our reporter heard about the wedding, attended it, interviewed some of the participants and wrote a news story. If there had been protestors at the wedding, we would have covered that the exact same way ? but there weren't any. We never said it was a good thing or a bad thing, we simply did our job by telling people what took place.

I took the bulk of the irate phone calls from people who called the paper to complain. Most of the complaints seem to revolve around the headline, "Historic Wedding," and the fact that we chose to put the story on the front page. My answer to the "Historic Wedding" headline is pretty simple. You don't have like something to be historic.

"The holocaust, bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Black Sox scandal are all historic. I'm in no way comparing the downtown wedding of two females to any of those events," Cegielski wrote, "even though some of you made it quite clear that you think gay marriage is much worse."

We have stories about child molesters, murders and all kinds of vicious, barbaric acts of evil committed by heinous criminals on our front page and yet we never receive a call from anyone saying 'I don't need my children reading this.' Never. Ever. However, a story about two women exchanging marriage vows and we get swamped with people worried about their children.

I had at least 20 or so readers express to me they think gay marriage is "an abomination against God." We never said it wasn't. We never said it was.

Cegielski's letter to readers (Leader-Call)

"We were simply reporting to the best of our ability," he continued. "However, I can't help but be saddened by the hate-filled viciousness of many of the comments directed toward our staff ? No one here deserves to be berated or yelled at simply because we were doing our job." Fifteen readers cancelled their subscriptions in protest, according to the Cegielski.

"You have every right to cancel your subscription," he added. "But you have no right to berate and belittle anyone on our staff."

Sony's Yoshida: 'used games can play on a PS4'

In news that should keep parties going until the early morning at Gamestops everywhere, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida tells Eurogamer that used games will still play on the PlayStation 4. Despite some issues with the translation, he stated clearly that "used games can play on a PS4." That appears to clearly put the issue to bed, despite rumors or patent misinterpretations passed around the internet recently. Now, we wait for our own chance to ask a few questions of Sony about its upcoming console like "what does it look like?", and the competition over at Microsoft goes on the hot seat with secondhand-loving gamers.

(AP) ? Ten days before a new deadline for broad, automatic government spending cuts, the sense of urgency that surrounded other recent fiscal crises is absent. Government agencies are preparing to absorb an $85 billion hit to their budgets, and politicians, at least for now, seem willing to accept the consequences.

President Barack Obama, back from a Florida golfing weekend, warned Tuesday that "people will lose their jobs" if Congress doesn't act. But lawmakers weren't in session to hear his appeal, and they aren't coming back to work until next week.

Still dividing the two sides are sharp differences over whether tax increases, which Obama wants and Republicans oppose, should be part of a budget deal.

Obama cautioned that if the immediate spending cuts ? known as sequestration ? occur, the full range of government will feel the effects. Among those he listed: furloughed FBI agents, reductions in spending for communities to pay police, firefighters and teachers, and decreased ability to respond to threats around the world.

"So far at least, the ideas that the Republicans have proposed ask nothing of the wealthiest Americans or the biggest corporations," Obama said at a White House event against a backdrop of firefighters and other emergency personnel. "So the burden is all on the first responders, or seniors or middle class families."

Aides say Obama is ready to take his case more directly to the public in an effort to pressure Republicans, either by traveling to vulnerable states or, as the White House often does, through local media interviews. They say neither Obama nor White House officials are now engaged in direct negotiations with Republican leaders.

The spending cuts, however, aren't perceived to be as calamitous as the threatened results of recent fights over the nation's borrowing authority and the "fiscal cliff" that would have cut spending and increased tax rates on all Americans paying income taxes. Failure to raise the debt ceiling would have left the government with no money to spend on myriad programs and could have precipitated an unprecedented default. The fiscal cliff had the potential of setting back the economic recovery.

In fact, many Republicans now see the automatic cuts in spending as the only way to tackle the federal deficit. Some liberals won't balk either because they want cuts in Pentagon spending. And many Democrats believe the cuts will have to materialize before Republicans agree to some increase in taxes.

"Some Democrats want it because of the defense cuts, and Republicans want it because they want to do anything to cut domestic spending," said Brendan Daly, a former top aide to Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the former House speaker and now Democratic leader. "And politically, it's difficult to oppose because the impact won't be so severe right away."

Democratic consultant Jim Manley, a former Senate leadership aide who periodically consults with Obama officials, added: "Not only do I expect the sequester to kick in, but unfortunately it will take a couple of temporary government shutdowns before Republicans realize they need to sit down and negotiate in good faith."

White House officials say they believe Republican House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio will ultimately relent in his opposition to additional taxes. They note that despite his initial stand against increasing tax rates in December, he eventually allowed a House vote to proceed raising the top rate on the wealthiest taxpayers.

Not this time, he said Tuesday: "The American people understand that the revenue debate is now closed."

House Republicans have proposed an alternative to the broad, immediate budget cuts, targeting specific spending and extending some of the reductions over a longer period of time. They also have said they are willing to undertake changes in the tax code and eliminate loopholes and tax subsidies. But they have said they would overhaul the tax system to reduce rates, not to raise revenue.

Boehner said in a statement following Obama's remarks: "Tax reform is a once-in-a generation opportunity to boost job creation in America. It should not be squandered to enable more Washington spending. Spending is the problem, spending must be the focus."

Tuesday's exchanges came as the co-chairs of a bipartisan deficit-reduction commission called for reducing the deficit by $2.4 trillion over the next 10 years, with much of the savings coming through health care changes, the closing of tax loopholes, a stingier adjustment of Social Security's cost-of-living increases and other measures.

The proposal by Republican former Sen. Alan Simpson of Wyoming and Democrat Erskine Bowles, the former chief of staff for President Bill Clinton, calls for about one-quarter of the savings to come from changes in health care programs and another quarter from revenue generated by tax changes.

In their plan, Bowles and Simpson say the automatic cuts scheduled for March 1 are too steep and could set back the economy.

"Sharp austerity could have the opposite effect by tempering the still-fragile economic recovery. In order to protect the recovery, the sequester should be avoided and deficit reduction should be phased in gradually," they wrote.

Obama has proposed about $1.5 trillion in long-term deficit reduction with savings from changes in health care programs, lower cost-of-living adjustments in Social Security and other government benefits, spending cuts and increases in revenue by overhauling the tax system

The White House says any elimination of corporate subsidies or tax breaks would be used to lower rates for corporations to 28 percent and to 25 percent for manufacturers, not to raise revenue.

Under Obama's plan, additional revenue of about $600 billion over 10 years would mostly come from reducing the value of itemized deductions and other tax preferences to 28 percent for families with incomes over $250,000.

Even as Obama and Republicans battle over the automatic cuts, Congress is also struggling over how to fund the government through the Sept. 30 end of the fiscal year. Every federal agency has been running on autopilot at essentially last year's funding level since October.

The Pentagon, for instance, has been denied long-sought increases for training and readiness, especially for the Navy and Marine Corps. House Appropriations Committee Chairman Harold Rogers, R-Ky., favors attaching a half-trillion-plus Pentagon funding bill and another measure funding veterans' programs to a spending bill that would pay for government operations for the final six months of the budget year.

Senate Democrats appear cool to the idea of permitting only defense-related spending measures to advance.
