Many Suffer Chronic Pain After Breast Cancer Surgery, Study Finds ...

TUESDAY, Jan. 22 (HealthDay News) ? About one-quarter of women who?ve had breast cancer surgery have significant and persistent breast pain six months after the procedure, a new study finds.

Women with breast pain before surgery were most likely to have long-term breast pain after the operation, according to the study recently published in the Journal of Pain.

Researchers followed 400 women after breast cancer surgery and found that about 12 reported severe breast pain, 13 percent had moderate pain and 43 percent had mild pain that lasted for six months. Just under 32 percent had no breast pain.

Four patient characteristics were associated with severe pain: younger age, less education, lower income and being non-white. Younger age was also associated with having moderate or mild pain, the University of California, San Francisco researchers said.

The major clinical factors associated with severe pain were: breast pain before surgery, changes in breast sensation, severity of pain after surgery, number of lymph nodes removed and undergoing additional lymph node removal.

The findings suggest that improvements in pain management after breast cancer surgery are needed to reduce the risk of persistent breast pain, the researchers said, according to a journal news release.

The Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival believes that chocolate makes people happy. We can all agree with them on that. The annual celebration of hot chocolate is going on now through February 14.

While you may think you know a thing or two about hot chocolate, there?s always room for an artisan marshmallow? I mean? to be surprised. The 2013 Hot Chocolate Festival involves 23 local ?Choc Stars? and 60 new hot chocolate flavours. Vancouver?s finest patisseries, chocolati?res, cafes and even food trucks have put their hearts and culinary talents into inventing new versions of the drink.

The hot chocolate menu options vary by day. Today, for example, Chocolate Arts, in Vancouver?s budding Armoury district will serve When Pigs Fly, featuring Alto El Sol, an exquisitely rich single origin chocolate, topped with a maple bacon marshmallow and served with a peanut butter cookie. Feel free to faint.

Meanwhile, Bel Cafe in the downtown Rosewood Hotel Georgia, is offering Pretty in Pink, a white chocolate drink with notes of rose and raspberry, served with the cafe?s rich vanilla bean shortbread. The Juice Truck, in cahoots with East Van chocolate experts Beta 5, is serving A Snowball?s Chance in Tokyo ? white choc matcha with a yuzu marshmallow.

Netflix streaming most dominant on HDTVs, more than double PC and tablets

As it turns out, the general public -- even us heathens who've cut the cord -- like watching video content on televisions rather than monitors. A stat chart culled from The NPD Group's, "Connected Intelligence Report, Application & Convergence" revealed the latest US-centric news on Netflix Instant usage; it puts HDTV use far above that of more traditional platforms like PCs and laptops. Averaged across age groups, 40 percent of people using Netflix Instant in the US are doing so on HDTVs, while just 14 percent are going through computers (both desktops and laptops). That's not just Smart TVs, but also, "another device connected to the TV" -- so that's game consoles, streaming boxes, and software level built-in streaming.

A mere 13 percent are using the service on tablets, and a paltry 8 percent are streaming on smartphones (a stat David Lynch would assuredly relish). Unsurprisingly, users are primarily of the younger variety: over 50 percent of 18 to 25-year-olds make up the HDTV statistic, and that group makes up nearly a full quarter of PC folks. Of course, none of this is a huge surprise to anyone that's ever tried comfortably watching anything longer than a few minutes on a 13-inch laptop screen. Check out the full chart just below.

The Sz?kesfeh?rv?r organisation of the Society for Military and Civil Cooperation and the Interspect Research Team have partnered to create the world?s highest-resolution aerial ortho image mosaic. Putting Google Earth to shame, the record-breaking aerial image mosaic shows the P?kozd Military Memorial Park from above, in stunning detail. Prior to creating the photographs, the young Hungarian researchers had developed bespoke image sensors and special methods for making aerial images from fast-moving aircraft. ?The enthusiastic team has been involved in development of the idea of a high spatial resolution ortho image mosaic since 2006,? the Society said in a statement. ?They had to overcome many obstacles to be the first in the world to make a subpixel orthophoto mosaic with details smaller than half a centimetre from a high speed aircraft.? The real importance of the record lies in the fact that the images were taken from a fast-moving Piper PA-32 Cherokee Six airplane (ground speed: 270km/h) rather than a slow-moving drone or hovering helicopter. As the researchers put it, ?higher resolution could be obtained from a helicopter, remote control flying vehicle, crane or on the ground, with a hand-held camera, but the basic idea of this method is high speed survey of the earth?s surface.?

High resolution aerial ortho image world record

The Sz?kesfeh?rv?r organization of the Society for Military and Civil Cooperation and the Interspect Research Team presents the world?s most detailed aerial ortho image mosaic. Anyone who sees the details of buildings, trees and people in the coordinate-based images ? with a resolution higher than any orthophoto made before from aircraft or satellite ? has the feeling of being in a sci-fi film. The procedure involved is a really impressive breakthrough in mapping the earth and making ortho-images.

The image
The Hungarian world record is forty times more detailed than the images of the spy satellites and three hundred times greater than the resolution of the best earth monitoring satellites. The resolution of the new aerial image map is four times higher than any earlier photo taken from an aircraft. The coordinate-based homogeneous image mosaic ? which, like earlier record achievements, is made up of dozens of aerial images ? cannot even be displayed by the popular Google Earth service that uses an algorithm suitable for 23 zoom levels only, while this aerial image represents level 25 according to the Google resolution scale. The most detailed images on Google Earth represent roughly five times lower resolution.

The consent of those figuring on the world-recorder orthophoto map was obtained in advance as we assumed that the faces would be recognizable. The team who made the images, conducted advance tests. Creation of the amazingly high resolution aerial images was preceded by several years of research work leading to the creation of special sensors and the development of special methods for making aerial images. The enthusiastic team has been involved in development of the idea of a high spatial resolution ortho image mosaic since 2006. They had to overcome many obstacles to be the first in the world to make a subpixel orthophoto mosaic with details smaller than half a centimetre from a high speed aircraft. The resulting images are generally used for environmental investigations.

The aerial image mosaic shows the Military Memorial Park, a National Memorial Place. The highly attractive image mosaic clearly reflects the objectives of the creator of the Memorial Park, the Society for Military and Civil Cooperation that aims to highlight the noble spirit of national defence. The aerial image mosaic reflects the harmony of the park located in one of Hungary?s most beautiful natural landscapes and it also shows the disciplined activities of some 200 students visiting the park.

The team
The aerial camera was developed in a project of the Interspect Research Team comprising young researchers of several Hungarian universities and civil organizations. The unique camera was designed by G?bor Bak? and Zsolt Moln?r and has been upgraded and fine-tuned continuously since 2006. The pilot of the Piper PA-32 Cherokee Six aircraft was Andr?s Arady, the shots were taken by G?bor Bak? using the IS4 calibrated aerial camera system, while Zsolt Moln?r was responsible for the security of the on-board staff. Geodesic field measurements were taken by G?bor Bak? and Eszter G?ber, while the orthophotos and the image mosaics were made with the contribution of Zsolt Moln?r.

Significance of the method, future perspective
?The significance of the orthophoto lies in the fact that such surveys can be as quick as traditional remote sensing surveys while they allow more detailed and more accurate measurements. The key benefits of the camera include high quality of images, true colours and speed. The sensitivity of the camera goes beyond the light sensing of the human eye, it also covers ultra violet and near infrared ranges in the electromagnetic spectrum, which allows high resolution not only for colour but also for the multispectral images. Amazingly detailed orthophoto maps allow a more accurate assessment of the green areas, more detailed mapping of the vegetation, and conclusions can be drawn about the volume of biomass, gas exchange processes of the green areas can be assessed more accurately and quickly than before, while the built environment can also be monitored more accurately,? G?bor Bak? leader of the research team explained.

Why is it a record?
The team became widely known in 2009 through its orthophoto mosaic of 1.8 spatial resolution of the Budapest Zoo. Since 2006 they have been working on a technology facilitating high resolution surveys and analysing high resolution orthophoto maps. No one has produced an aerial orthophoto mosaic with higher spatial resolution that the 2009 world recorder presented in Budapest, while the resolution of this orthophoto made in P?kozd is four times higher.

The record is related specifically to the high-speed aerial remote sensing. Obviously, higher resolution could be obtained from a helicopter, remote control flying vehicle, crane or on the ground, with a hand-held camera, but the basic idea of this method is high speed survey of the earth?s surface. The ground speed of 270 km/h allows images to be created before the light and atmospheric conditions change. It can be used to survey relatively large areas.

Boeing Battery Investigation Complications - Business Insider

While?Boeing?hurries to find what caused lithium ion batteries in its Dreamliner jets to catch fire, and get back in the air after being grounded last week,?a new report from?The National Transportation Safety Board may complicate things.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the organization took the unusual step of releasing a report early Sunday morning that finds two separate battery fires were caused by different issues.

Investigators looking into a battery malfunction on a Nippon Airlines flight on January 15th found that the battery may have been overcharged, causing the fire that forced an emergency landing. This report reveals that the battery causing a fire that took place a week earlier on a grounded Japan Airlines plane "did not exceed its designed voltage."

Boeing likely hoped that they could zero in on one issue and get the planes back into the air quickly.

This could mean two different investigations looking into two different problems with the batteries.

Early on, executives like Qatar Airways chief Akbar Al-Baker, the largest customer for the plain, downplayed the issues, calling them "teething problems" common to new planes. Now he's grounded his fleet, and the longer the planes are grounded, the worse things could get for Boeing.

If airlines start demanding compensation or cutting back on orders, this could get extremely expensive.?
