Not all Thais are Gaga about America

BANGKOK, Thailand ? She?s an unlikely national ambassador, but to understand the complexities of U.S. relations with the emerging economies of Southeast Asia, it can be revealing to ask what people think of Lady Gaga.

Last month, the American superstar's world tour brought her through Thailand and other countries in the region, which has long held huge geopolitical significance for U.S. policymakers and is now the focus of intense diplomatic and economic rivalry as the U.S. faces a rising China determined to stake its place as a global superpower.

While Thailand is a place that seems ? on the surface at least ? to have an anything-goes attitude ideally suited to the outrageous and controversial Gaga, appearances can be deceptive. Despite its notorious nightlife and sex shows, Thailand is very conservative in many ways, and the concept of "saving face" is important. Even if embarrassing issues are obvious, discussing them openly is frowned upon.?

'Inappropriate' behavior
For instance, two days ahead of her sold-out Bangkok concert, Gaga fell afoul of many Thais when she sent a light-hearted tweet saying: "I just landed in Bangkok baby! Ready for 50,000 screaming Thai monsters. I wanna get lost in a lady market and buy a fake Rolex."

It?s no secret that fake Rolexes are openly displayed and sold in Bangkok's infamous Patpong area, where sex is also for sale in dozens of go-go bars. But Thais don't like foreigners talking about such activities, and Gaga's comment caused a storm of protest.

"We are more civilized than you think," tweeted Thai DJ Surahit Siamwalla in response, announcing that he planned to boycott the concert.

Some Thais also took offense when Gaga appeared on stage during one of her concerts scantily dressed and sitting on a motorcycle with a Thai flag trailing behind her. The Culture Ministry made an official complaint that this use of the flag was "inappropriate and hurt Thai people's sentiment.?

The spat is indicative of a growing unease among traditional Thais over what they see as foreign influences corrupting the country. It is somewhat surprising, because for decades the country's conservative elite was strongly pro-American, in part because the Thai ruling class was desperate to prevent the spread of Communism, and embraced America's assistance.

Recently, however, the conservative Thai establishment has grown increasingly hostile to the "Western" values symbolized by America, partly in response to growing pressure from ordinary people for greater democracy and freedom of speech.

One flashpoint in this debate was the treatment of a U.S. citizen arrested last year for circulating a partial translation of a book by an American author that took a critical look at the Thai royal family. Joe Gordon, who was born in Thailand but emigrated and became a car salesman in Colorado, was sentenced to two and a half years in jail last December for breaking the ?l?se majest?? law that forbids criticism of the monarchy.?

The United States found itself dragged into the debate, with hundreds of royalists protesting outside the U.S. embassy in Bangkok after American diplomats criticized the jailing of Gordon and called for greater freedom of speech.

One of them was?Tul Sitthisomwong, a leader of the royalist United Siam group.

?We feel annoyed,? he said during a recent interview. ?We know that America focuses on human rights and freedom of people, but ?l?se majest?? in Thailand ... is not about human rights, it's about breaking the law.?

Tul said that the U.S. is meddling in other countries to try to maintain its waning influence. "They are like big brother, but right now they're weaker and getting sick but they try to be strong."?

He also said that there might be a hidden agenda in the U.S. request to use Thailand?s U-Tapao Royal Thai Navy Airfield for its humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.

?After the mission in the Middle East, they are coming back to this region, Southeast Asia. It likes confronting China ? so I think America would like to have a powerful [base] again in this region. So they pick up Thailand,? he said.

It doesn't help that America is also widely seen as arrogant. ?They are the best, that's what they always think, that they are the best,? Juthamas Carranco, who works in a Bangkok hotel, said.

'A good example' for Thailand
But to many younger Southeast Asians, modernity is nothing to fear, and tolerance is a virtue. America produces movies and music that they love, and represents freedom from religious and cultural restrictions.

?America is a good example for Thailand ? especially the education system, work ethic and the freedom,? said Amorn Wanichwiwatana, a professor of political science at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.

?Lady Gaga is an artist, and I want Thais to look at her like that,? he added. ?When she performed in the concert with Thai flag, I don't think she had a bad intention. I feel she even respected our culture.?

Jiraporn Prasert, an office worker who attended the Gaga concert in Bangkok, also didn?t believe the singer was being deliberately offensive to Thais.

?I like Lady Gaga very much,? said Jiraporn. ?About the problem that we are having with her, I want people to look at her from different angles. I would like them to look at what cause the issue. Is it really from Gaga or because of things surround her??

When Lady Gaga performed in Bangkok, I was also one of the 50,000 people who watched her perform, and whatever controversies she may have caused around the region, there was no doubt about one thing: she rocked the arena and the audience loved it.

CAIRO - Defeated Egyptian presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq left Egypt on Tuesday, local sources reported,?a day after a prosecutor referred?corruption lawsuits naming him to an investigating judge.

The state news agency MENA said Shafik left Cairo airport?unaccompanied on a United Arab Emirates airline early on?Tuesday.?Shafik was on his way to a religious?pilgrimage, aides said.

Shafik's rival Mohammed Morsi?of the Muslim Brotherhood was?declared winner of a presidential run-off on Sunday.

A judicial?source said the general prosecutor had transferred graft cases?against Shafik to the investigating judge on Monday, Reuters reported.

The lawsuits allege that Shafik, a former air force?commander, was involved in corrupt land deals and other?corruption during his time as civil aviation minister between?2002 and 2011, the source said.

"Ahmed Shafik left today at dawn for Abu Dhabi and from?there he will head to the holy lands of Saudi Arabia to perform?the Omra (pilgrimage) before returning to his homeland Egypt,''?Shafik's campaign team said on his official Facebook page.

Several of Shafik's associates could not immediately be?reached for further comment.

Acclaimed screenwriter Nora Ephron dead at 71

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar-nominated screenwriter Nora Ephron, known for romantic comedies "When Harry Met Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle" as well as books and essays, has died in New York after battling leukemia. She was 71.

"It is with great sadness that we report that Nora Ephron has died," her publisher Alfred A. Knopf, said in a statement. "She brought an awful lot of people a tremendous amount of joy. She will be sorely missed."

The New York Times cited her son, Jacob Bernstein, as saying Ephron died of pneumonia brought about by acute myeloid leukemia. Bernstein is a freelance reporter for the Times.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued a statement calling the loss "a devastating one" for the city's arts and cultural community.

"From her earliest days at New York City's newspapers to her biggest Hollywood successes, Nora always loved a good New York story, and she could tell them like no one else," Bloomberg said in a statement.

Ephron, who often parlayed her own love life into movies like "Heartburn" and gave her acerbic take on aging in the 2010 essay collection, "I Remember Nothing: And Other Reflections," had kept her illness largely private except for close friends and family.

"At some point, your luck is going to run out ... You are very aware with friends getting sick that it can end in a second," Ephron told Reuters in a 2010 interview while promoting the book.

The elegant Ephron, known for habitually dressing in black, urged aging friends and readers to make the most of their lives.

"You should eat delicious things while you can still eat them, go to wonderful places while you still can ... and not have evenings where you say to yourself, 'What am I doing here? Why am I here? I am bored witless!'" she told Reuters.

She began her career as a journalist but transitioned into movies, leaving behind a legacy of more than a dozen films, often featuring strong female characters, that she either wrote, produced or directed. She was nominated for three Academy Awards for "Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle" and the drama "Silkwood" with Meryl Streep playing an anti-nuclear activist.

Other romantic comedies included "You've Got Mail," starring Meg Ryan, and her last film "Julie & Julia" in 2009, which had Streep portraying the fearless celebrity cook Julia Child.

Ephron also wrote for the stage, authoring the 2002 play "Imaginary Friends" about the rivalry of authors Mary McCarthy and Lillian Hellman, and "Love, Loss and What I Wore," with her sister Delia, in 2009.

NEW YORK, WASHINGTON, HOLLYWOOD

Born May 19, 1941 in New York City and raised in Beverly Hills by screenwriter parents, Ephron worked briefly as a White House intern before going into journalism. She quickly became known as a humorist with essays on subjects ranging from food and fashion to feminism.

She started in the entertainment industry while married to her second husband, The Washington Post's famed Watergate investigative reporter Carl Bernstein.

She helped rewrite a version of the script for the movie "All The President's Men," about Bernstein and Bob Woodward's uncovering of the political scandal that led to the resignation of Richard Nixon in 1974. Although that screenplay was not used, it led to a TV movie screenwriting job for Ephron.

Her big movie break came after a messy divorce from Bernstein, which was the genesis for her 1983 novel "Heartburn" that she later adapted into the bittersweet hit film of the same name starring Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep.

That film ushered in a string of box office successes in the late 1980s and 1990s, including "When Harry Met Sally," "Michael" with John Travolta, "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail," that saw Ephron gradually add producer and director to her resume and become one of Hollywood's most successful makers of romantic comedies.

Although her movies raked in tens of millions of dollars at box offices worldwide, Ephron never won the industry's highest honor, an Academy Award.

After box office flops "Hanging Up" and "Lucky Numbers" in 2000, Ephron focused on essays, writing for the stage, and blogging for the online news site The Huffington Post.

Her humorous 2006 collection "I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman" became a bestseller on the New York Times list.

At the time of her death, Ephron had a biographical movie about singer Peggy Lee in development that was due to star Reese Witherspoon, according to the Internet movie website, IMDB.com.

Ephron was married three times and is survived by her husband of more than 20 years, writer Nicholas Pileggi, and two children with Bernstein.

Unpredictable winds and high temperatures were challenging crews in their battle Saturday against a Utah wildfire that forced more than 2,300 people to flee their homes.

Firefighters remained posted around houses in Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City, after the blaze burned within a quarter mile of some homes Friday, says Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Teresa Rigby.

No homes have burned, she said, and fire officials want to see what the nearly 9-square-mile fire on tinder-dry grasslands does Saturday afternoon before deciding whether residents can return to their homes.

Rigby says an updated count shows an evacuation order affects nearly 600 homes and over 2,300 residents.

The fire that officials believe was started Thursday by target shooters is 30 percent contained.

Iranian General: Military Strike Would Be the End of Israel

The deputy chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of Iran?s Armed Forces said on Saturday Israeli military action against Iran's nuclear program would lead to the collapse of the Jewish state, Iran's FARS news agency reported.

Iranian Major General Mostafa Izadi ?The Islamic Revolution enjoys high capability, and if the Zionist regime wants to take an action against us, it will cause its imminent end,? Major General Mostafa Izadi told the Persian service of FARS in an interview published on Saturday. ?Undoubtedly they (the Zionists) cannot do any harm to the revolution and the system.?

Last week's round of nuclear talks between Iran and world powers in Moscow failed to secure a breakthrough, heightening fears Israel might take unilateral military action to curb Iran's nuclear activities.

The two sides agreed to a follow-up meeting of technical experts on July 3, saving the process from outright failure.

TEHRAN (FNA)- A deputy chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces reiterated the country's capability to repel threats, and warned Israel that any military aggression against Iran would lead to an immediate end of the Zionist regime.

"The Islamic Revolution enjoys high capability, and if the Zionist regime wants to take an action against us, it will cause its imminent end," Major General Mostafa Izadi told FNA on Saturday.

The General further ensured that Israel lacks the courage and ability to harm Iran.

"In addition to military capabilities, we also have many other capabilities and possibilities which are way beyond the Zionist regime's abilities and capabilities," he added.

"For instance, the many islands that Iran has in the Persian Gulf have provided us with capabilities to make Iran the superior military force in the region," the general added.

Iranian officials and commanders have warned that any enemy move, even the slightest aggressions, against the Islamic Republic would be reciprocated with a destructive response and will endanger the US interests all around the world.

Israel and its close ally the United States accuse Iran of seeking a nuclear weapon, while they have never presented any corroborative document to substantiate their allegations. Both Washington and Tel Aviv possess advanced weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear warheads.

Iran vehemently denies the charges, insisting that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only. Tehran stresses that the country has always pursued a civilian path to provide power to the growing number of Iranian population, whose fossil fuel would eventually run dry.

Both Israel and the US have recently intensified rhetoric against Iran, saying an attack on the Islamic Republic's nuclear site is impending.

Iran has, in return, warned that it would target Israel and its worldwide interests in case it comes under attack by the Tel Aviv.

Iran has also warned that it could close the strategic Strait of Hormuz if it became the target of a military attack over its nuclear program.

Strait of Hormuz, the entrance to the strategic Persian Gulf waterway, is a major oil shipping route.

Now, before you get your thongs too far up into your shaven female parts and scream defamation, that term is being used as a colloquialism and rhetorical hyperbole. Are we clear on that?

Knowing what makes someone influential could of course help advertisers spread their products through social media, but it can also be used more altruistically, such as promoting HIV testing in Africa. "Finding influential people is all the rage today," says Sinan Aral, who studies the spread of information at New York University. But he says that many companies who claim to measure influence online are not approaching it in a scientific way.

Aral and his colleague Dylan Walker, also at NYU, studied influence by watching how use of a film-rating app spread through Facebook users. Starting with a seed group of 7730 users, the researchers designed the app to randomly send messages to the app users' friends, encouraging them to also install the app. Just under 42,000 messages were sent out to a random selection of the initial groups' 1.3 million friends, resulting in nearly 1000 new app users.

This random selection of who gets the message allowed the researchers to avoid common pitfalls in measuring influence, such as homophily bias ? the principle that we tend to make friends with people like ourselves. "If two friends adopt a product one after the other, current methods have a hard time distinguishing whether it is because of peer influence, or rather that the friends simply have similar preferences," explains Aral.

Who are the power brokers?

Analysing the results in combination with users' Facebook profile data revealed a number of insights into which people are the most influential. Men are 49 per cent more influential than women, but women are 12 per cent less susceptible to influence than men, and they exert 46 per cent more influence over men than over other women. Influence also increases with age, with people over 31 being 51 per cent better at convincing their friends than those under 18.

Relationship status also plays a role. Single individuals are 113 per cent more influential than those in a relationship and 128 per cent more than those who define their relationship status as "it's complicated". On the flip side, susceptibility rises with increasing relationship commitment ? up until you get married.

Aral says that statistics cannot explain why these effects occur, but one possible reason is that those in more serious relationships have greater obligation to respond to requests from their partner's family, with social pressure easing once you get married. "It may be more difficult to reject a request from one's future father-in-law just before the wedding," he says. "After the marriage, all bets are off."

"This is probably the first experimental contribution to the long-standing question of influence and susceptibility," says Manuel Cebrian who studies social networks at the University of California, San Diego. He adds that Aral and Walker's findings are much more significant than previous attempts to measure influence because of their statistical validity.
