Arguments Against Gay Marriage? and Their Rebuttals

Jason Wakefield has a fantastic article in the latest issue of New Humanist magazine about the arguments against gay marriage and why they?re all wrong. It may not be anything you haven?t heard before, but it?s always nice to have an easy reference to send to conservative Christians/homophobes:

2. ?We must preserve traditional marriage.?

Given that marriage has always changed to suit the culture of the time and place, I would refrain from ever calling it ?traditional?. If marriage was truly traditional, interracial couples would not be allowed to wed, one could marry a child, ceremonies would be arranged by parents to share familial wealth and the Church of England would still be under the authority of the Pope.

?

12. ?Why is it so important for gay people to have marriage??

For the same reason it is important to straight people. Our relationships are just as loving and valid as heterosexual relationships, but our current marriage laws suggest it is not. We are equally human and we should be treated by the law as such.

There are more arguments against marriage equality than the ones Wakefield mentions but they all have simple rebuttals. There?s not a single good reason to prevent same-sex marriage. It?s all plain, simple, almost-entirely-religion-based bigotry.

Wakefield?s full list is here.

Advisory panel moves to make HIV testing routine

CHICAGO (Reuters) - An influential U.S. panel has called for routine HIV screening for all Americans aged 15 to 65, a change that could help reduce some of the stigma about getting tested for the sexually transmitted infection that causes AIDS.

The draft recommendations, released on Monday by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, a government-backed group of doctors and scientists, also called for routine HIV testing for all pregnant women.

"The prior recommendations were for screening high-risk adults and adolescents," said task force member Dr Douglas Owens who is a medical professor at Stanford University.

"The current recommendation is for screening everyone, regardless of their risk," said Owens, who is also affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System in California.

Nearly 1.2 million people in the United States are infected with HIV, yet 20 to 25 percent of them do not know it.

"This marks a monumental shift in how HIV in the United States can be prevented, diagnosed and treated," said Carl Schmid, deputy executive director of The AIDS Institute, an AIDS advocacy group.

The new guidelines by the task force are expected to affect the reimbursement of HIV testing, removing one of the barriers to the tests, Schmid's group said in a statement.

Under the Affordable Care Act, insurers are required to cover preventive services that are recommended by the task force. The change brings the group more in line with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which in 2006 recommended HIV testing for everyone between 13 and 64.

The recommendations, which had been expected, are based on the latest evidence showing the benefits of early HIV testing and treatment. Recent studies have shown that HIV treatment can reduce transmission of the virus to an uninfected partner by as much as 96 percent.

"Treatment has two benefits. One is to the person who has HIV, and also treatment helps prevent transmission and protects a person's partner," Owens said.

Dr. Jeffrey Lennox, a professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and chief of infectious disease at Grady Memorial Hospital, an inner-city hospital in Atlanta, said under the current recommendations, many doctors simply fail to offer the tests.

"In our practice, we see patients every week who are newly diagnosed with HIV - people who have seen many physicians in the past 10 years and none of them had ever offered testing," Lennox said.

Many of these patients have far advanced disease, that could have been caught earlier and successfully treated.

Owens said he hopes the change will make it easier for doctors to offer testing.

"You are offering this to adolescents and adults and everyone. The conversation you have with people is likely to be easier," he said.

The draft recommendations are based on a study of the most recent evidence on the risks and benefits of HIV testing published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

The guidelines will be available for a 30-day public comment period before final recommendations are released, likely sometime next year.

Apple Patents A System-Wide Event-Tracking And Geotagging System For iOS Devices

journalsWe've seen a few apps try to manage the ambitious feat of becoming the journal for your entire mobile life, but a new Apple patent suggests the company may be trying to build that kind of functionality right into iOS, in a way that keeps track of all your phone events, including when and where they happened. Keeping track of every action on your phone sounds creepy, but it could be very useful.

This photo combo made from file photos shows Miami Marlins players, from left, pitcher Mark Buehrle, shortstop Jose Reyes, and pitcher Josh Johnson. Miami traded the three players to the Toronto Blue Jays, a person familiar with the agreement said Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012. The person confirmed the trade to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the teams weren't officially commenting. The person said the trade sent several of the Blue Jays' best young players to Miami. (AP Photos)

(AP) ? The Miami Marlins' latest payroll purge received final approval Monday from the commissioner's office, and as the team's top baseball executive began to discuss the deal during a conference call, a bad connection generated waves of reverberating noise that filled the phone line.

Nearly a week after the Marlins swung their widely ridiculed trade with Toronto, negative feedback keeps coming.

Commissioner Bud Selig approved the blockbuster deal, however, even though it made Marlins fans irate and made the team a nationwide punch line. The trade sends All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes to the Blue Jays along with pitchers Mark Buehrle and Josh Johnson, catcher John Buck and outfielder Emilio Bonifacio for seven players, none of whom has a big-money contract.

Miami received infielders Yunel Escobar and Adeiny Hechavarria, pitchers Henderson Alvarez, Anthony DeSclafani and Justin Nicolino, catcher Jeff Mathis and outfielder Jake Marisnick.

By swinging the deal only months after the Marlins moved into a new stadium built with taxpayer money, they pared from their books $146.5 million in payroll. That's their net savings after agreeing to send $8.5 million to the Blue Jays as part of the trade.

Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said he understood why fans were mad, and confirmed the trade was necessary because owner Jeffrey Loria wanted to pare payroll. Beinfest also conceded the deal will make it harder for the team to recruit free agents in the future.

But Selig decided not to block it.

"This transaction, involving established major leaguers and highly regarded young players and prospects, represents the exercise of plausible baseball judgment on the part of both clubs (and) does not violate any express rule of Major League Baseball and does not otherwise warrant the exercise of any of my powers to prevent its completion," Selig said in a statement. "It is, of course, up to the clubs involved to make the case to their respective fans that this transaction makes sense and enhances the competitive position of each, now or in the future."

The players traded by the Marlins have combined guaranteed salaries of $163.75 million through 2018, including $96 million due Reyes.

"I understand the pause the fans have with the instability in our roster at a time when we were hoping to be very stable in the new stadium," Beinfest said. "It's not a lot of fun."

By contrast, the trade stamps the Blue Jays as contenders in the AL East. They haven't reached the playoffs since winning their second consecutive World Series in 1993.

Miami also finalized a deal with outfielder Juan Pierre, who agreed to a $1.6 million, one-year contract. That leaves the Marlins with an estimated opening-day payroll of $36 million for active players, which would be their lowest since 2008. In the latest figures, Oakland had the lowest payroll in the majors this year at $59.5 million.

While Beinfest said the Marlins acquired championship-caliber talent, fans believe Loria's goal was to increase his profits in the new ballpark rather than put increased revenue into the roster.

"We did receive a payroll range from ownership that we needed to achieve," Beinfest said. "With this transaction, we have achieved that payroll range."

The Marlins flopped as big spenders. They began the year with a franchise-record payroll of $112 million, then went 69-93, their worst record since 1999.

After sinking to last place by midseason, the Marlins traded former NL batting champion Hanley Ramirez, second baseman Omar Infante, right-hander Anibal Sanchez and closer Heath Bell.

"We've finished in last place the past two years, and that is unacceptable," Loria said in a statement. "It's incumbent on us to make the changes necessary to make us a winner again. It may not happen overnight. But with the players we acquired in the second half of last season, coupled with the infusion of players we are acquiring now, we will be returning to Marlins baseball: high energy and hungry."

Reyes, Buehrle and Bell signed multiyear deals as newcomers a year ago during an unprecedented Marlins spending spree, and Beinfest acknowledged other free agents might be now reluctant to sign with Miami.

"It'll be a factor," he said. "I don't think we're happy about this at all. I understand there may be some disdain in the marketplace. We won't know until we get into those negotiations with free agents. It's definitely not great for the club, and we're going to have to deal with it."

Miami's biggest remaining star, slugger Giancarlo Stanton, has been among those expressing anger about the trade. Beinfest said he hadn't talked with Stanton about the deal.

"I know this is an emotional time," Beinfest said. "I'm sure it has been tough for him. Our feeling was to maybe let the dust settle a little bit and then talk to Giancarlo. I hear the frustration. It's not unexpected. This has been a tough go, but we think it's best for us moving forward."

Players' union head Michael Weiner withheld comment, saying he was awaiting more input from Major League Baseball.

In January 2009, the union reached an agreement with MLB and the Marlins covering 2010-12 which Weiner said was a "response to our concerns that revenue sharing proceeds have not been used as required. As part of the deal, Weiner said the team planned to "use such proceeds to increase player payroll annually as they move toward the opening of their new ballpark."

Selig said he was sensitive to how Marlins fans reacted to the trade.

"Baseball is a social institution with important social responsibilities, and I fully understand that the Miami community has done its part to put the Marlins into a position to succeed with beautiful new Marlins Park," Selig said. "Going forward, I will continue to monitor this situation with the expectation that the Marlins will take into account the sentiments of their fans, who deserve the best efforts and considered judgment of their club. I have received assurances from the ownership of the Marlins that they share these beliefs and are fully committed to build a long-term winning team that their fans can be proud of."

NOTES: Pierre would earn a $25,000 bonus if he's an All-Star, $25,000 each for winning a Gold Glove or Silver Slugger, $50,000 if he's an LCS MVP, $100,000 if he's the World Series MVP and $100,000 if he's the league MVP.

What is Iran's role in Israel-Gaza violence?

As Israel and Gaza continue their airstrikes, the effects of the Arab Spring could affect the conflict's outcome as leaders, including Egypt's newly elected president, denounce Israel's aggression. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

By Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

It was an unguarded comment that may have strayed close to the truth: Britain?s Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks said he believes tensions over Iran were behind the Israel-Gaza violence.

That remark ? made in a radio studio when he thought he was off the air ? echoes a theory that Tehran?s fingerprints are all over the current escalation of violence. ?

Realizing that he was actually live on air, Sacks did not elaborate on his theory but Western intelligence agencies and the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) do agree that longer-range rockets being fired toward Tel Aviv are Iranian-manufactured Fajr-5 missiles.

The Fajr-5s are assembled locally after being shipped from Iran via Egypt?s Sinai region from where they are smuggled into Gaza through tunnels, the IDF says on its own public information site.

Israel believes weapons travel via Sudan ? a theory underlined when it launched airstrikes on an apparent arms factory there last month, killing two people.

Digitalglobe / AFP - Getty Images, file

This combo of two satellite pictures released by DigitalGlobe shows the Yarmouk military manufacturing facility in Khartoum on October 12 (L) and on October 26, (R), two days after blasts at the factory, which the Sudanese government blamed on an Israeli airstrike.

Two Palestinian militant groups - Islamic Jihad and Hamas - have claimed to have fired Fajr-5s.?Hamas calls its rockets "Palestinian made" and does not acknowledge receiving weapons from Iran, although it does refer to Iran as a "supporter of the resistance."

From Sudan to cyber, secret war with Iran heats up

A senior Iranian lawmaker has denied supplying Hamas with weapons. "We deny having delivered the Fajr-5 to the Palestinian resistance,? Allaeddine Boroujerdi, head of the Tehran parliament's foreign affairs committee said on Saturday, according to the Daily Star newspaper in Lebanon.? He added that Hamas was ?perfectly capable of producing the arms it needs.?

So who is telling the truth?

On Monday, the Wikileaks site reposted on Twitter a link to a 2009 diplomatic cable, first leaked last year, detailing Israeli intelligence on how Iran was supplying Hamas with long-range weapons and how such artillery was being brought into Gaza.

That viewpoint is shared by retired General Barry McCaffrey, a security consultant and NBC News analyst, who told MSNBC?s Alex Witt: ??I think the Iranians have manipulated particularly [Lebanon-based] Hezbollah but also Hamas. They've equipped them with significant amounts of rocketry. One of the unclassified figures was 120,000 rockets in either southern Lebanon or Gaza in the range of Israel, so the Iranians are actively promoting trouble in Syria and Lebanon and Gaza.?

Jane Kinninmont, senior research fellow at the British think tank Chatham House, told?NBC News? U.K. partner Channel 4 News there were some indications that shifting allegiances might point to Iran?s motives.

"In the background, for more than a year, Qatar, Jordan and other Gulf states have been trying to prise Hamas away from its recent alliance with Iran in return for stronger support from the Arab world," she said. ?"Iran may be trying to wreck this by dragging Hamas back into a military conflict where it needs its Iranian rockets.?

Supporting that theory, Iran?s semi-official Fars news agency on Sunday accused Qatar of helping in the killing of Hamas military leader Ahmed Jabari by planting spy devices in Gaza.?It alleged that the emir of Qatar, King Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, distributed watches and ballpoint pens among Hamas leaders when he visited the area in October, and that those items contained transmitters that emit signals to Israeli satellites.

Israel steps up targeted attacks in heavily populated Gaza; mediation efforts gather pace

But other experts believe Iran?s role in this particular outbreak of violence is overstated.

?It would not be a surprise but I think it is unlikely,? Ali Ansari, professor of modern history at St. Andrews University in Scotland and senior research fellow at Chatham House, told NBC News.

?I don?t think even Iran would be stupid enough to provide a pretext for a war with Israel, which is something neither side wants despite all the rhetoric.?

Daniel Levy, director for Middle East and North Africa for the London-based European Council on Foreign Relations, said: ?Certainly Israel will be looking at the wider issues such as Iran but I think there?s a risk of reading too much into Iranian involvement.

?There?s a war of narratives going on here. Israel will tend to blame Iran for everything it can and vice versa.?

With the rise of Islamism in the wake of the Arab Spring, and the shift of its base from Damascus to Doha, Hamas has been less reliant on Iran, the main Shiite power in the region, for backing against Israel.

?Hamas is now firmly aligned with the Sunni Arab camp and can distance itself from Iran,? Levy noted.

So is the current violence really a precursor to a showdown with Iran? Unlikely, according to Ansari and Levy.

Yonatan Touval, a Tel Aviv-based analyst, told the New York Times: ?If Israel?s political leadership is treating the current operation in Gaza as something of a rehearsal for a future war with Hezbollah and Iran, it is rehearsing the wrong play.?

Nevertheless, Iran-Israel tension remains high. ?Tehran is getting a bit of a break at the moment because all the attention is being focused elsewhere,? Chris Doyle, director of the?Council?for?Arab-British Understanding, told NBC News. ?But if there is a truce agreement and current violence tails off, Iran remains the number one issue for Israel and the wider region.?

Ayman Mohyeldin, NBC News Correspondent in Cairo, contributed to this report.

Cyrille Diabate, Ivan Menjivar big winners on UFC 145 preliminary card

The preliminary card of UFC 154 had a little bit of everything. Cyrille Diabate picked up a win with a fight that packed three-rounds worth of action into a half-round. Diabate leveled Chad Griggs early with a punch, but Griggs turned the fight around with a takedown. But Griggs could only hold on for so long as his nose leaked blood. Diabate took Griggs' back and won with a rear naked choke at 2:24 in the first round.

John Makdessi pulled the upset by jab, jab, jabbing his way to a 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 win over Sam Stout.

Using unrelenting leg kicks, Antonio Carvalho picked up the decision win over Anderson Silva protege Rodrigo Damm.

Ivan Menjivar may have already locked up UFC 154's Submission of the Night bonus with a nasty armbar of Azamat Gashimov. He locked it up at 2:44 of the first.

In other UFC 154 preliminary action:

Darren Elkins def. Steven Siler via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Matthew Riddle def. John Maguire via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Carmelo Anthony scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the New York Knicks downed the Indiana Pacers, 88-76, Sunday at Madison Square Garden. J.R. Smith followed with 13 points and seven boards and Raymond Felton chipped in 11 points and eight assists to help the Knicks bounce back from their first loss of the season on Friday against Memphis. Paul George led the Pacers with 20 points, while David West donated 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds for Indiana, which has dropped three of its last four games.

Toronto 97, Orlando 86

DeMar DeRozan scored 20 points and Jose Calderon dished out 18 assists to lead the Toronto Raptors to a 97-86 decision over the Orlando Magic at the Air Canada Centre. Public Speaking Tips. Filmed In Zurich During WriteCon By Joanna ...

by Joanna Penn on November 10, 2012

Speaking is a core part of my business, and I really enjoy sharing my enthusiasm with other people, educating and empowering authors.

Joanna Penn speaking at Zurich Write ConHowever, I get a lot of questions about how to actually do public speaking, as well as how to learn and get speaking appearances.

So here?s a few tips I recorded in Zurich while at Nuance WriteCon last weekend, interspersed with some images of the event. Below the video is a text round-up in case you want to read.

In the video I mention:

  • If you feel nervous, try reframing those feelings as the energy you need for the performance. A teacher of mine, Robert Rabbin calls it ?shakti?, and it helps you perform.
  • Speaking is a kind of performance, and I am 150% me when I speak. I am an energetic speaker but I am not like that all the time. I am an introvert so I need to recharge my energy alone later but the actual event is a performance, but an authentic one.
  • How to get speaking appearances. For me, it?s based on my platform online ? this blog, twitter and word-of-mouth recommendations. I don?t solicit for speaking usually, but I am always open to options!

I am available to speak for 1 hour all the way to multi-day events. Popular topics include self-publishing/independent publishing, online platform building, digital marketing, branding, multimedia and aspects of writing. Audiences are often authors, publishing industry people or small business/ entrepreneurs. More details and testimonials on my speaking page.

I did reply back to him, I always make a real effort to respond to all my emails, though sometimes it?s difficult because I do get a lot..

?Anyhow this is what I said back to him

Hi I totally agree with you I don?t have time for fantasy?

Any numbers I share with you, anything that other members have made in
empower network is not fantasy?

In fact in the years I have been marketing I have never been part of a
business that has the community, integrity, compensation that empower network does.

..Also,

My name isn?t David Wood, I have no power to give you the ?system? I paid
for for free.. Sorry buddy..

I can also tell that you don?t have the time, patience to build a solid
business online. So you can do both of us a favor
and just pass this one up..

Maybe eventually you will find something that is more realistic for you
and your needs..

Have an Awesome Day!

==========================================================

He replied back with this!

Lol that?s funny. A challenge but I won?t take bait. I got the time for
business. Just not fake business. (disgruntled human being)

===============================================

I regularly throughout the years have gotten emails from people like that.? When I first got into business online they use to upset me because I really from my heart have always done the best I could do by the people that put their faith in me.

Being in business for myself for years has giving me a little thicker skin?

..Anyways I?ll share with you my fantasy money I made from my fantasy business this week :)

Megan Smith: Introducing: The Malala Fund

I'm blogging to let people know that a broad group of individuals and organization from many parts of the world have come together to create the "MalalaFund" on behalf of Malala Yousafzai. Our goal is to provide Malala with a fund she can direct so when she is well and ready, she can pursue her vision for girls education and empowerment. Vital Voices, the women's and girls global leadership NGO, stepped up to host the fund and many people have made themselves available to help with any advice, strategy or help with any and all aspects of the fund -- including the outreach we are starting today to raise initial funds.

Some background on how this came together:

Our group came together over the past few weeks since that shocking day October 9th when Malala was shot by the Taliban for simply wanting education and pushing for all girls and boys to have access to education. We are from around the world, so we worked through email threads and conference calls where initially the focus was on how to get some funds to help the family directly right away. A group of volunteers at Harvard Kennedy School and some wonderful diaspora family friends worked quickly to create an Indigogo site that raised funds for the family directly, while some organizations like VDay and others granted directly.

Since that family support funding work was moving ahead, we therefore turned our focus, based on some great coaching of the various non-profit leaders involved in our discussions, to the creation of a fund in Malala's honor that she and her father/family could be leaders in directing the use of to make impact on girls education and empowerment in Pakistan and around the world. You can read more about the group and the work on MalalaFund.org in the about advisors and friends section.

Launch of Malala Fund today on Nov 10 - Malala Day

As we coordinated with the UN Education Envoy team lead by UN Education Envoy Gordon Brown we learned the kind of fund we had in mind was an idea Malala herself spoke about recently --- in the call for "Malala Day" on the iamMalala.org site you can read "...that just a few weeks before her shooting she told her friends that her aim was to set up the Malala Foundation to campaign for the 32 million girls round the world who are not at school."

We honor that wish with the launch of the Malala Fund today at MalalaFund.org -- Vital Voices is hosting the fund so that we could setup quickly and we thank them for that support.

On behalf of our global team of individuals and supporting organizations -- please support the fund by donating at www.MalalaFund.org or in the US texting "BRAVE" to 27722 to donate $10.

We hope people will:

Malala Yousafzai is all of our daughter, like Iqbal Masih who was all of our son. We stand together as a world community to make it clear to those who would deny these fundamental rights for our children, all children, that we do not tolerate these actions and will will diligently work together globally to make education universally available for all children everywhere.

Thank you for any support you can offer. Please donate, share and work towards Malala's vision wherever you live -- if you need more information visit MalalaFund.org or contact us at malalafund@vitalvoices.org -- and if you have creative and innovative ideas we should know about for the fund, please email at malalafund@vitalvoices.org.

Arianna Huffington: Sunday Roundup

This week, Obama won, Romney lost, rape turned out to be 2012's most surprising campaign issue, and Karl Rove refused to believe the math -- while his not-so-super Super PAC blamed its misspent $300 million on "very, very weak candidates." But it wasn't the GOP's candidates that were to blame; it was the party's narrow and sclerotic message. Romney actually attracted the vote of his party's usual coalition. But that's not enough anymore. The numbers aren't there, and are trending away from Republicans. "It's not a traditional America anymore," lamented Bill O'Reilly. "The white establishment is now a minority" -- replaced in his telling by black and brown people "who want stuff." Indeed they do; stuff like immigration reform, affordable health care, reproductive rights, and economic justice. For a two-party system to be healthy, both parties need to be in good shape. Right now the Republican Party is badly in need of a soul transplant.

How To Treat Uterus Cancer - Lady Care Health

GD Star Rating
loading...

How To Treat Uterus Cancer Uterine Cancer treatment depends upon the detection of the stage of the cancer. If the cancer is in its initial stage then it can be treated with surgery. Other possible treatment options are Hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo oophorectomy in which the uterus is removed and in some cases ovaries, fallopian tubes and pelvic lymph nodes also have to be removed.

Radiation therapy and progesterone hormone and chemotherapy are other therapies that are used for the treatment of uterus cancer.

Options to Treat Uterus Cancer

Initial Treatment

When a female is diagnosed with uterus cancer then the doctor suggests the surgery to remove the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. All the tissues and cells are tested to check the stage of the cancer. The examination of the lymph nodes is necessary to check whether cancer has spread outside the uterus. If it in lymph nodes then they are also removed. The course of treatment to be adopted depends upon the extent of the cancer cell growth.

Side Effects of Different Course of Treatment

Most of the course of action for the treatment of uterus cancer leads to some side effects which vary on the type of treatment given and the age and health of the affected person. The surgeon explains you the possible side effects of various treatments. The hysterectomy will have a bearing on your fertility and you will not be able to become pregnant.

Various Causes Of Vascular Complications Of Diabetes

Radiation therapy leads to feelings of fatigue, irritation on the skin and changes in bowel movements and urine flow. Chemotherapy leads to loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea and mouth sores. You can use home remedies to fight with the side effects but the side effect of hysterectomy is permanent.

Ongoing Check up

After the completion of the initial treatment the follow up care is necessary. The regular check up should be done as recommended by the doctor. This will help you to know the changes that are occurring in the body after giving the treatment. The changes can be good or bad and plan of action can be made with ongoing check up.

The chances of recurrence of uterine cancer always exist. This is not sure that the recurred cancer is of low-risk so a follow up check up of cancer must be done regularly. If the cancer comes in the pelvic area then it should be treated with radiation therapy as radiation therapy helps to stop the growth of cancer cells and heal them if they are found in the vagina.

Palliative Care

The treatment of cancer consists of cure of cancer and to increase the quality of life of people after giving them treatment. Palliative care improves the quality of living of a person as the patient finds the way to manage with the symptoms of cancer.

If a person is passing through the advanced stage of the cancer then the course of treatment is not a good option as the side effects, time and cost of treatment is more than the chances of cure. So it?s very difficult to decide when to stop giving the treatment as everyone?s life is aimed at prolonging the life.

LUKOIL says looks into Exxon offer on Iraqi oil: report

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's second largest crude producer LUKOIL said on Friday it will study an offer from Exxon to take over the West Qurna-1 oilfield in Iraq, Interfax news agency said.

ExxonMobil has informed the Iraqi government it wants to pull out of the $50 billion oil project in southern Iraq.

LUKOIL, which is already developing West Qurna-2, has previously said West Qurna-1 is "too big for it to swallow", but on Friday said it would at least look into the proposal.

"We received an offer from Exxon. We will likely study this possibility. But we haven't make any decision today," Andrei Kuzyayev, head of LUKOIL foreign operations was quoted as saying.

Baghdad expects Exxon to complete the sale of its shares in West Qurna-1 by the end of December and the U.S. company has told Iraq it is already in talks with other oil majors, a senior official said on Friday.

"Exxon informed us that it has started talks with some oil majors, including BP , Shell , Lukoil, CNPC and Eni offering them its complete stake in West Qurna-1," said Faisal Abdullah, a spokesman for Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Hussain Shahristani.

"Our condition for approval of the purchase is that the buyer should have adequate financial and technical resources to develop the super-giant oilfield."

LUKOIL is attempting to offset production decline at its fields in Russia, where it faces competition from the state-backed companies, by acquiring foreign upstream assets.

LUKOIL is active in Middle East, Central Asia, West Africa and Latin America. But Russia's vast Arctic offshore reserves are off-limits for the company due to legal restrictions, which allow only state-controlled company participation.

Doubts about who can replace Exxon in the important project could raise questions about Iraq's target to increase crude output to 5-6 million barrels per day by 2015 from 3.4 million bpd.

Some industry sources have said Baghdad is keen to replace Exxon with companies from Russia or China. But it was unclear which companies would have the financial heft to follow Exxon. (Reporting by Vladimir Soldatkin and Ahmed Rasheed in Baghdad, editing by William Hardy)

NEW YORK (AP) ? A gasoline shortage caused by Superstorm Sandy forced 1970s-era rationing on New Yorkers Friday, adding a fuel-gauge obsession to their frayed nerves and dwindling patience.

"I take passenger, I look at gas. I take another passenger, I look at gas," said New York City taxi driver Shi Shir K. Roy. "Tension all the time."

Though rationing that allowed private motorists to fill up only every other day seemed to help with gas lines, it didn't answer motorists' questions about why they had been waiting for days in hourslong lines to fuel up. The confusion led some, like Angel Ventura, to panic.

Ventura, who drives a delivery van for a camera rental company, has taken to hunting for gasoline every time his gauge drops below a quarter of a tank. "It makes me crazy, thinking I might hit empty and not be able to find it," he said.

As drivers waited on police-monitored lines, thousands more in the region got their power back for the first time since Sandy came ashore 12 days ago. More than 420,000 customers were still without power in New Jersey and the New York City area. President Barack Obama, who visited the battered Jersey coast two days after the storm, said he would survey the damage in New York next week from the storm, which the American Red Cross said will create its largest U.S. relief effort since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The gasoline rationing ? the first in the nation's largest city since the 1970s Arab oil embargo ? forced motorists to line up depending on whether their license plate ends with odd or even numbers.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said one-third of the city's gas stations were open Friday, compared to 25 percent the day before, and cautioned, "there's no guarantee that odd-even is going to make a big difference." His estimate was countered by the Energy Department, which said that more than 70 percent of the city's stations have gas available for sales.

Industry officials first blamed the shortage on gas stations that lost power, but now say the problem has shifted to supply terminals, which are either shut or operating at reduced capacity. Drivers are also quicker to top off tanks because they're afraid gasoline won't be available, AAA spokesman Michael Green said.

Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service, said the densely populated New York-New Jersey area has fewer stations per capita than any other major metropolitan area, making the shortage an even bigger problem. He said rationing earlier might have helped in New York City.

"It does curb some of the manic or panic behavior," Kloza said.

Gasoline moves millions of New Yorkers, just as the subway does. Hundreds of thousands of people drive to work, especially from the outer boroughs, and taxis and delivery vans are part of every gridlocked intersection.

Friday was an "odd" day in the rationing plan, although not everyone had gotten with the program.

"Even? Odd? Whatever it is, I didn't have the right one," said Joe Standart, a 62-year-old artist whose even-numbered car was ordered off a West Side gas station line by a police officer.

Teniele Newbury, a mother of three, defended her need to use a car to go about her daily routine.

"People probably think we can take the subway," she said, "but I've got three kids I've got to drop off at three different schools. You try that on the subway with three little kids."

On Long Island, where odd-even rationing also began Friday, a spot check found shorter lines ? 30 to 40 cars at most ? and more stations with gas. In Brooklyn, car service owner Gary Lindenbaum said waits last week had been five or six hours.

"The rationing really helps us a lot," said Lindenbaum, owner of Court Express. "We need to work. We need the gas."

Lindenbaum drew the line at one hoarding technique: He posted a sign that said, "Drivers, do not carry full gas containers in your car."

Some cab drivers have been doing just that. One taxi reeked of gasoline from the extra cans sloshing around in the back seat with a passenger.

Desperate drivers weren't paying much attention to prices, but in New Jersey, seven gas stations were among the eight businesses sued by the state Friday on price-gouging claims.

Meanwhile, many officials were pointing to power companies as the culprit in the region's slow recovery. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has called for investigation of the region's utilities, criticizing them as unprepared and badly managed. On Friday, two congressmen from Long Island urged the federal government ? even the military ? to come in and help the Long Island Power Authority restore electricity.

"When the lights went off in Baghdad and the lights went off in Kabul, it was the Army Corps of Engineers that went into Baghdad and Kabul to turn the lights back on," said Rep. Steve Israel. "We don't need to turn the lights back on in Kabul and Baghdad. We need to turn the lights back on in Plainview and Great Neck and the south shore."

Long Island's main utility, the Long Island Power Authority, has declined to respond to criticism, while New York utility Consolidated Edison Corp. has called the storm the worst in its history.

On Friday evening, National Grid, which manages the system on LIPA's behalf, said about 95 percent of customers affected by the storm would have power restored by the end of Tuesday. It said those 95 percent are in non-flood areas.

Obama said Friday that he will meet with affected residents and first responders in a tour of the hardest-hit areas of the city.

Some residents of Toms River, N.J., were given a precious hour Friday to see their storm-wrecked houses for the first time and grab warm-weather clothing, important pictures ? whatever belongings they could. When Steve Dabern saw his flooded house, the floor was torn in pieces, the refrigerator was on its side and the kitchen furniture was in the living room.

"Sickness. I felt sick," he said.

Bloomberg said the gas shortages could last for a couple of weeks, worrying many New Yorkers who say gas is vital to their lives.

At St. Mary's Children's Hospital in Queens, workers who visit 4,000 sick children have been getting up as early as 2 a.m. to get on gas lines, said chief administrative officer Hope Mavaro Iliceto. Some have run out of fuel while waiting in line, she said.

At the Brooklyn gas station, Ruben Quinonez and Edgar Luna were in the delivery truck they drive for a bakery in Mahopac, north of the city. They normally work from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., making deliveries in Brooklyn and Manhattan, but every day since the storm they have added a long wait in a gas line.

"You can't take the risk," Quinonez said. "Bread has got to be fresh."

my job: part 1 | little things + big stuff

I just don?t blog about it much anymore, do I? I?ll be honest: The initial excitement about having my first full-time social work job has worn off. (Might partially be because I plan to stay home when T + E get here? More on that later).

I?ve struggled to explain what I do at work when asked. ?Facilitating adoptions from foster care? is pretty broad.?

What I actually do: When a foster kid?s case worker files the paperwork with the court to begin the termination of parental rights proceedings, they also send me an adoption referral if the kid?s plan is adoption. I get lots of info on the kid, and then I call the current foster parents for more. I write up a summary of the child: their personality, likes and dislikes, what their time in foster care has been like, education, health, significant relationships, and birth parent info. If a kid is already in a foster home that wants to adopt, I review it with them.

If he/she is not in a pre-adoptive home, I make a shorter, less detailed, more exciting profile to send to other agencies or to post on Adopt US Kids in order to recruit an adoptive family. This can end up being really sad or really exciting. A lot of people want babies and toddlers, and babies and toddlers are not for whom we recruit parents. It is fun to see the home studies families submit for consideration. And my first recruitment case is just now getting underway, but I?m thinking it?s going to be awesome when I find a family that is a perfect match for these kids? needs.?

I also complete the necessary (boring) legal paperwork with the family that authorizes them to receive a maintenance payment, health insurance for the child, day care, and legal fees. (Did you know adopting from ?foster care costs nothing? You kind of even get ?paid.?)

Next, I complete a home study update for them. Usually, another person has already done the family?s foster care home study. I visit the family in their home to get more info. Because our agency covers three counties, this can mean long drives. (And meeting cool dogs.) I add info specific to adoption, the child, and their current situation ? health, employment, finances, household composition. When all this is completed and approved, I write a letter to the court stating my evaluation of the family and their fit for the child to be adopted.

And, I?ll say it once again: We need more foster parents! Foster parents who are willing to foster without the promise of adoption. It happens, but not always.

A look at tech companies with recent IPOs

Facebook and other companies that went public recently have reported quarterly earnings. Here's a look at earnings reports from some tech companies that had IPOs since last year.

? Oct. 4: Zynga Inc., the maker "FarmVille" and other online games, says it expects a loss for the third quarter due to weak demand for some of its titles. It's also taking a charge related to its acquisition of OMGPop, a mobile game maker, which it bought for $183 million in March.

? Oct. 23: Facebook Inc. discloses that some 14 percent of its ad revenue came from mobile advertising. It started showing ads to users who access Facebook from their phones and tablet computers about six months ago. Investors have been worried that Facebook isn't taking advantage of its growing mobile user base. It began trading on May 18, 2012.

? Oct. 24: Zynga Inc. reports stronger-than-expected revenue for the third quarter, with a 3 percent growth from a year ago to $316.6 million. Interest in many of its Facebook games has been waning, and Zynga has had trouble making money from mobile games. The company, which has been trying to convince investors that it can revive growth, says it has signed a deal to offer online poker and casino games, played with real money, in the U.K. It plans to launch those games in the first half of 2013. Zynga began trading on Dec. 16, 2011.

Angie's List Inc. posts a wider loss in the third quarter due to hefty advertising spending, but succeeded in attracting hundreds of thousands of new subscribers to its online business ratings and reviews, boosting revenue by 75 percent. Its first day of trading was Nov. 17, 2011.

? Nov. 1: LinkedIn Corp. outpaces Wall Street's expectations with its third-quarter results, solidifying its status as an investor favorite at a time when other Internet companies have fallen from grace. The professional networking company booked a profit in the third quarter, reversing a loss in the same period a year ago as revenue grew at a faster pace than analysts expected. It began trading publicly on May 19, 2011.

Online review site Yelp Inc. says narrowed its loss in the recent quarter, helped by a steady increase in traffic and expansion into more cities. It began trading on March 2, 2012.

? Thursday: Groupon Inc., the No. 1 online deals service, fails to show investors that its business is growing as quickly as they would like. Revenue was below expectations. CEO Andrew Mason says weakness in Europe offset Groupon's "solid performance in North America." Groupon began trading publicly Nov. 4, 2011.

Decision Time!

Decision Time!

News editors world-wide are competing with each other to create hard hitting headlines depicting the situation in Greece, anno 2012.

Whatever language they speak, we hear and read that Greece has passed the 25% unemployment rate. Youth unemployment is edging towards 55%. Greece needs to find 13.5 billion in extra savings. Greece will go bankrupt if it doesn't find these savings.

Media everywhere speak about debt to GDP ratios, interest rates, billions of Euros to recapitalize banks, and the extra austerity measures needed to reverse the situation.

Hardly anybody speaks of the people making up the percentages and suffering from the measures. Virtually nobody talks about Elena, a teacher who stayed home to look after her ill parents and eventually developed the same cancer that killed her parents. And when Elena is mentioned, the standard reaction is only too often "It's their fault".

When doctor Kostas Syrigos met Elena for the first time, his mouth dropped. He and his colleagues were dumbfounded at the sight of this woman who had been diagnosed with cancer only a year before.

Because she was not even a statistic any more, Elena could not avail of even the most basic health care, and had not been able to receive the treatment she needed.

Not that it really matters much, for even if she did have the necessary qualifications as a statistic, the Greek government had dismantled the whole state run health care system to the point of it becoming completely non-functional.

Through a network of "underground doctors" working free and outside the system, Elena ended up with doctor Syrigos. Nothing could have prepared him for what he saw.

He relates how he and his colleagues could not hold back their tears when they saw how the breast cancer had developed into a growth the size of an orange. The growth had broken through her skin and created a weeping wound she drained with paper napkins she got from a local coffe shop. She could not even afford to buy these.

Like hundreds of thousands of others, Elena could not find a job, and simply ran out of money. She could not claim unemployment assistance and her social contributions dried up.

Elena ceased to be a statistic, and for a system that speaks in percentages and interest rates, she ceased to exist. Elena was one of the lucky ones. Many don't get to see the likes of doctor Syrigos and simply die.

They are the forgotten ones.

They are forgotten by the system, forgotten by the press, and very often forgotten by their people who can't afford to remember them. "It's their fault? How can this be?"

While the Prime Minister of Greece laments that he has to "save Greece from this catastrophe", he and his government fail to ask the all-important question. "Which catastrophe do we save Greece from first?"

No doubt Greece is experiencing a serious economic crisis, bordering on, and probably deteriorating into a depression.

No doubt, a lot of financial institutions and multinational companies who invested heavily in Greece see their investments endangered and are wondering how are they going to get either value for money or their investment back?

Equally so, there is no doubt that many of these investments and contracts were not exactly made with the best interest of Greece or the People of Greece in mind. Corruption is a serious problem, not just in Greece, and must be tackled.

All national and international news channels report on the corrupt nature of many of Greece's past and current politicians, officials, bankers, etc. and rightfully point to this as one of the main contributing factors to the situation the country finds itself in.

As many of the national and international news channels who point this out, fail to point out that there is a flip side to this coin. No matter how corruptible these people are corruption can only take place if there is somebody willing to exploit them.

By the nature of things, that exploitation is triggered by greed. Why does nobody ask the obvious question: "Who does the exploiting?" Those that do find themselves in court for asking the question, or worse, get killed.

It is accepted that the whole economic catastrophe the world is experiencing was triggered by a few unscrupulous individuals and their companies, who engaged in an orgy of fiction, conning everybody into believing they were the modern day Alchemists, not just capable of turning lead into gold, but also capable of turning the hot air they puffed into unimaginable sums of money.

They promised heaven on earth for all, investors and consumers alike. And with the assistance of the corrupt, they created the mask hiding the economic catastrophe we are facing. The mask has now dropped, and with that we not only see the Big Lie for what it is, we are also confronted with the real victims of the Big Lie.

The real victims are not those who knowingly and willingly invested in the pyramid scheme of reckless lending. Elena is the real victim. Millions of Elena?s in Greece and elsewhere are the real victims.

Elena does not have the power of international finance or big corporate business, or the ability to corrupt at will, at her disposal. Elena doesn't want much. She does not want repayment of vast sums of money. She does not charge extortionate interest rates. She does not demand the shirt of people's back.

All Elena wants, and is fully entitled to, is to live a peaceful, dignified life. She is denied this life, because today?s Alchemists insist on making her pay for their mistakes.

That is the real catastrophe in Greece, the humanitarian disaster, personified by Elena. That is the catastrophe that will define Greece and the rest of the world for generations to come.

The question the Greek PM and his government must ask themselves is not "How do we prevent the catastrophe", the question they must answer is "which catastrophe do we prevent first?"

The choice they need to make is a choice between satisfying unbridled greed and fuelling corruption, or creating the conditions for people to live in a world they can safely call home.

The fundamental mistake they make is in trying to base their decision on "the facts", expressed in numbers, Euros and cents. That method can be used to show the financial institutions and multinational companies what their situation is. It is however the very wrong tool, and therefore the very wrong basis from which to decide on the quality of life Elena will have.

That is quite simply not a decision for any government to make. The only decision any government can make in this regard is how they will that ensure the Elena?s of this world are able to live the life their humanity entitles them to. Failure to do so in the first place is what has resulted in the unfolding humanitarian disaster in Greece. This disaster will spread faster than they know if they make the wrong decisions. That is the catastrophe that needs preventing over and above anything else. There is no choice.
