Cedar Rapids- Swapping homes with strangers. That?s what an Eastern Iowa woman and her family hope they can do, except they don?t currently live in Iowa. The family is in Norfolk, Virginia, nearly 11 hundred miles from Eastern Iowa. But they hope to find someone in Eastern Iowa, that wants to be where they are. KCRG talked to them online via Skype on Friday.
The Medina family hasn?t had a single bite on their Virginia home, and it?s been for sale for months. So, they decided it was worth a shot and posted the swap offer to Craigslist. Shannon and Carlos Median met while they were both in the Navy. They have lived in Virginia for nearly six years. ?I was active until I was diagnosed with cancer, and then I got out on medical discharge and then we just continued to stay because my husband was active,? said Shannon.
Doctors diagnosed Shannon with Malignant Melanoma, a type of skin cancer. ?It?s came back about 7 times since the first diagnosis,? said Shannon. That?s why she and her family want to come back to Iowa. ?The reason why my husband is getting out of the military is because we don?t have any support here. I don?t have any family for when I do have to do a cancer check-up and my scans and surgery,? said Shannon.
So they posted the following on Craigslist: ?My Virginia home for your Iowa home. We are 10 minutes away from the Beach (Virginia Beach). We are a military family wanting to go back home to Iowa. Our home is going on the market next week for $179,000. If you have a Home in Iowa and you want to move to VA please contact me. Our house has been remodeled. ?I thought it was worth a try to see if someone wanted to swap houses or you buy ours, we buy theirs, whatever needs to be done to get us home to family,? said Shannon. ?We need the support from our family. Especially with her medical condition and I think it will be the best place to raise our kids,? added Carlos.
The family wants what they have now, just in Eastern Iowa. A good neighborhood, a home suitable for four, and a yard for their kids to play in. But they just need someone in Eastern Iowa who wants to be in Norfolk, Virginia. The Medina?s said they?ve had a few offers, but none that were a good fit for their family.
